Description
The 2022 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most revered domaines in Puligny. Combining crystalline precision with luxurious texture, it captures the warmth and generosity of the 2022 vintage while retaining Leflaive’s signature finesse. Sourced from one of the appellation’s most celebrated premier cru sites, this wine offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential. Les Folatières is famed for its airy elegance and floral lift, and in the hands of Domaine Leflaive it becomes a reference point for the style. Biodynamic farming, meticulous sorting and traditional Burgundian craftsmanship result in a wine that is both intensely expressive and beautifully composed. With a history dating back to the early 20th century, Domaine Leflaive has long been instrumental in elevating Puligny-Montrachet to global acclaim, and this cuvée is a textbook expression of why.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières shows a luminous, pale gold hue with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is refined yet expansive, opening with white flowers, acacia and blossom, followed by layers of ripe citrus, lemon zest, pear and white peach. Subtle notes of hazelnut, fresh almond, chalky minerality and a delicate touch of fine oak (vanilla and lightly toasted brioche) add complexity as it evolves in the glass.
On the palate, this wine is both silky and taut, with a precise, linear core of acidity supporting a generous, concentrated mid-palate. Flavors of citrus oil, stone fruit and crisp orchard apple intertwine with saline, stony nuances that are so characteristic of Puligny. The oak is impeccably integrated, offering texture and length without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, pure and mineral-driven, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable in youth for its energy and perfume, it should develop additional nutty, honeyed and truffled complexity over 8–15 years in a good cellar, and potentially longer in magnum.
Production
Les Folatières is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most prized premier cru climats, set on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with varying layers of clay and stones that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The slope and exposure provide excellent ripening conditions while preserving freshness, a balance that proved ideal in the generous 2022 vintage. Domaine Leflaive farms these parcels biodynamically, using manual work in the vines, strict yield control and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to ensure only pristine Chardonnay grapes are brought to the cellar. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, with native yeasts guiding the process to fully express terroir. The wine is then aged on fine lees, typically around 12 months or more, with careful bâtonnage and minimal intervention, before a period of élevage in tank to harmonize the blend prior to bottling.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières is a superb partner for refined, delicately prepared dishes. Think butter-poached or grilled lobster, scallops in a light citrus or beurre blanc sauce, turbot, sole or halibut, as well as fine poultry such as roast Bresse chicken with morels or cream. It also pairs beautifully with high-quality, not-too-strong cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or mild goat’s cheese. Serve ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F); if it is too cold, the aromas and texture will be muted. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a large Burgundy glass to allow the bouquet to unfurl, while older vintages should be handled more gently, with a brief, careful decant only if necessary to remove sediment.
