Description

The 2022 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered estates. Sourced from a prized Premier Cru climat in Puligny, this wine combines precision, depth, and elegance in a way that only Leflaive seems to master. The 2022 vintage adds a touch of generosity to the classic Puligny tension, making this a compelling choice for both collectors and serious Chardonnay lovers. Les Combettes is known for its seductive texture and layered complexity, and in the hands of Domaine Leflaive it becomes a reference point for the appellation. Old vines, biodynamic farming, and meticulous cellar work ensure a wine of great purity and finesse, firmly rooted in Burgundy’s long lineage of fine, ageworthy whites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Les Combettes shows a luminous, pale lemon-gold color with green highlights, suggesting both youth and concentration. The nose is detailed and expressive, opening with white flowers, lemon zest, and crisp pear, then deepening into notes of ripe peach, acacia honey, fresh hazelnut, and a delicate hint of brioche. Subtle flinty and chalky nuances frame the fruit, reminding you of its Puligny origin. On the palate, this is both silky and precise: a fine, creamy texture supported by a spine of vibrant acidity. Citrus and orchard fruits—Meyer lemon, pear, and Mirabelle plum—are layered with nuances of almond cream, buttered pastry, and a whisper of vanilla from well-judged oak. The finish is long, saline, and mouthwatering, with a persistent minerality and a touch of spice. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential; under proper cellar conditions, this wine should evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, developing more nutty, honeyed, and truffle-inflected complexity.

Production
Les Combettes is a renowned Premier Cru site on the Puligny side bordering Meursault, with well-drained limestone and clay soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Domaine Leflaive farms the vineyard biodynamically, promoting soil life and vine health, and harvests by hand to ensure that only perfectly ripe, intact Chardonnay grapes reach the cellar. After careful sorting, the must is gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new but always used with restraint to preserve finesse. The wine then matures on its lees, with minimal intervention, to build texture and complexity while retaining the clarity, tension, and mineral drive that are hallmarks of both the terroir and the estate’s style.

Food & Serving
This refined Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru is a natural partner for sophisticated, delicately prepared dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with fine cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère, or a mild cow’s milk tomme. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase its aromatic detail without muting its freshness. For young bottles, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, while more mature examples may be best served directly from the bottle, poured carefully to avoid disturbing any sediment.

Producer
Domaine Leflaive, based in Puligny-Montrachet, is widely regarded as one of the greatest white wine producers in Burgundy and the world. With roots dating back to the early 20th century, the estate was notably shaped by Anne-Claude Leflaive, who became a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the region, long before it was fashionable. Today, the domaine’s holdings in some of Burgundy’s most illustrious climats—ranging from village vineyards to Grand Crus such as Chevalier-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet—are farmed with meticulous care and an unwavering commitment to expressing terroir. Consistently high critical acclaim and a devoted global following have cemented Domaine Leflaive’s status as a reference point for pure, precise, and profoundly ageworthy Chardonnay from Burgundy.
