Description
The 2022 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon Magnum is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most revered producers in Puligny. Presented in magnum, it offers both an elevated aging capacity and a truly ceremonial format for the table. This wine captures the precision, depth and mineral tension that have made Leflaive a reference point for Chardonnay worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clavoillon shows a pale to medium lemon color with youthful green reflections, signaling its vibrancy and concentration. The nose is finely detailed and pure, opening with aromas of lemon zest, white flowers, and crisp pear, followed by notes of wet stone, chalk, fresh almond, and a delicate hint of buttered brioche and subtle oak spice.
On the palate, this premier cru is precise and focused, with a core of citrus and orchard fruit wrapped in a refined, chalky minerality. Flavors of Meyer lemon, green apple, pear and white peach are layered with nuances of hazelnut, pastry cream and a saline, mouthwatering finish. The texture is silky yet tightly knit, carried by vibrant acidity and perfectly judged oak. In magnum format, this 2022 has excellent aging potential: while already approachable in its youth for its purity and energy, it will evolve beautifully over 10–15+ years, developing more complexity, nuttiness and honeyed depth.
Production
Clavoillon is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s historic premier cru vineyards, situated on well-drained limestone and clay-limestone soils that give the wine its hallmark tension and minerality. Domaine Leflaive farms these vines biodynamically, with meticulous attention to soil health, low yields and strict selection at harvest, usually carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Chardonnay grapes are picked. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with native yeasts in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, before aging on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The result is a wine that reflects both its exceptional terroir and Leflaive’s restrained, precise winemaking philosophy.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine: think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light beurre blanc, turbot or sole with citrus beurre blanc, roast chicken with morel cream sauce, or veal sweetbreads. It also pairs beautifully with delicate cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or mild goat’s cheese. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter, particularly in magnum, to open up the nose and harmonize the palate.
Producer
Domaine Leflaive is one of Burgundy’s most iconic white wine estates, based in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet. With roots stretching back to the early 20th century, the domaine rose to international prominence under the guidance of Anne-Claude Leflaive, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the region. Today, Leflaive is widely regarded as a benchmark for Chardonnay, crafting some of the most sought-after wines in the Côte de Beaune from village-level Puligny to grand crus such as Chevalier- and Bâtard-Montrachet. Their unwavering commitment to terroir expression, meticulous vineyard work and precise, elegant winemaking has secured Domaine Leflaive a place among the absolute elite of Burgundy producers.
