Description
The 2022 Domaine Lamy-Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Chardonnay in magnum format is a generous, village-level white Burgundy that combines classic mineral precision with the ripe, sunny charm of the vintage. Bottled in a large-format magnum, it’s ideal for the table, aging gracefully and offering a more harmonious evolution than standard bottles. This wine captures the essence of Chassagne-Montrachet: a place where Chardonnay delivers both power and finesse, framed by the estate’s long-standing expertise.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chassagne-Montrachet shows a luminous pale gold color with green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with citrus zest, white flowers and green apple, then deepening into notes of pear, stone fruit, warm brioche and a subtle touch of toasted hazelnut and struck flint.
On the palate, the 2022 is generous yet finely structured: a supple, silky texture balanced by a lively core of acidity. Expect flavors of lemon curd, ripe orchard fruit and a touch of peach, supported by a chalky, saline minerality that is very true to Chassagne. Well-judged oak brings gentle vanilla and spice without overshadowing the fruit. In magnum, the wine has particularly strong aging potential; while already approachable in its youth, it should develop added complexity and harmony over 8–12 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and tertiary nuances.
Production
Sourced from limestone-rich clay and marl soils typical of Chassagne-Montrachet, this Chardonnay reflects a terroir renowned for producing structured, mineral-driven white Burgundy. The vineyards are tended with careful attention to vine health and yield control, ensuring concentration and balance in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to preserve berry integrity and allow for strict selection. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented in oak, with a proportion of new barrels used judiciously to frame, not dominate, the wine. Extended aging on fine lees adds texture and complexity, resulting in a Chassagne-Montrachet that is both precise and generous, particularly well-suited to magnum bottling.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, sole meunière, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a cream and mushroom sauce. It also works well with richer seafood gratins, firm cow’s milk cheeses (Comté, Beaufort, aged Gruyère) and delicately flavored poultry. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F): slightly cool to emphasize freshness, allowing the wine to warm gently in the glass for full aromatic expression. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is recommended, especially in its first years, to help the wine open up and showcase its layered fruit and subtle oak.
