Description

The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc Pessac-Léognan is one of Bordeaux’s benchmark dry whites, celebrated for its precision, depth, and remarkable aging potential. Produced in limited quantities from meticulously tended vineyards, it balances crystalline freshness with layered complexity, making it a coveted bottle for serious collectors and white Bordeaux enthusiasts. As a reference estate in Pessac-Léognan, Domaine de Chevalier has built a long-standing reputation for crafting whites that rival top grand cru Burgundies in finesse and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc shows a bright, pale gold color with green highlights, signalling both youth and intensity. The nose is highly expressive and refined, offering notes of zesty lemon, lime zest, and ripe grapefruit layered with white peach, pear, and subtle tropical hints like passion fruit. Underneath the fruit lies a complex herbal and mineral backbone—fresh-cut fennel, lemongrass, crushed stone, and delicate smoky/graphite nuances typical of top Graves whites, all framed by a touch of fine, integrated oak spice. On the palate, this wine is focused, vibrant, and beautifully textured. A core of citrus and stone fruit is wrapped in a creamy, lees-derived mid-palate, balanced by a racy line of acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Flavors of grapefruit, nectarine, and green apple mingle with saline minerality, subtle toast, and a hint of waxy lanolin from Sémillon. The finish is long, pure, and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent capacity to evolve. While already impressive in its youth, the 2022 has the structure and concentration to develop additional complexity over 10–20 years in bottle, gaining honeyed, nutty, and truffled nuances with age.

Production
Domaine de Chevalier lies in a secluded, forested enclave of Pessac-Léognan, where deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay provide exceptional drainage and a cool, balanced microclimate—ideal for producing refined, long-lived whites. The 2022 is typically a blend dominated by Sauvignon Blanc with a significant proportion of Sémillon, all harvested by hand in multiple passes (tries) to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are selected. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without overwhelming its natural purity. The wine is then aged on its lees in barrel, with gentle bâtonnage as needed, to develop creaminess, aromatic depth, and the signature tension between richness and freshness that defines Domaine de Chevalier Blanc.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a superb partner for refined seafood and elegant, subtly sauced dishes. Think oysters, scallops, turbot, or sole, grilled lobster with herb butter, sushi and sashimi, or roast chicken with tarragon and lemon. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, young Comté, and lightly creamy vegetable dishes such as asparagus or fennel gratin. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold—ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F)—to allow the aromas and texture to fully express themselves. Young bottles can benefit from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes to open up the bouquet, while more mature vintages should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine de Chevalier is one of the most respected estates in Pessac-Léognan and a member of the 1959 Graves Classification, renowned for producing both red and white wines of remarkable elegance and longevity. Located just south of Bordeaux, the property has a history that dates back to at least the 18th century, but it truly rose to prominence under the stewardship of the Bernard family, who acquired it in 1983. Known for their meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking, they have elevated Domaine de Chevalier to the top tier of Bordeaux estates. The white wine, in particular, is frequently cited among the greatest dry whites of Bordeaux, often compared with top Burgundian whites for its finesse, complexity, and ability to age gracefully over decades.
