Description

The 2022 Clos Mogador Magnum is a powerful, age-worthy red from one of Priorat’s true benchmark estates. Bottled in magnum for extended development and special occasions, this wine captures the dramatic intensity of Priorat’s steep, slate-laden hillsides in a generous, collectible format. It’s a bottle that speaks both to the region’s rugged beauty and to Clos Mogador’s unwavering pursuit of quality. Blending old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena with carefully selected Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, Clos Mogador crafts a wine of remarkable concentration, precision, and depth. Since the 1980s, this single estate has helped to define modern Priorat, playing a pivotal role in elevating the appellation to international acclaim and DOQ status.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos Mogador shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, with vibrant reflections that hint at its youth and intensity. The nose is complex and layered, offering ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plum compote intertwined with wild Mediterranean herbs (thyme, rosemary, fennel), graphite, and warm slate. Subtle notes of cocoa, licorice, spice box, and a touch of smoked meat emerge with air, reflecting both the terroir and skilled élevage. On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured, yet surprisingly poised. Concentrated dark fruit is supported by firm but polished tannins and a fresh, mineral spine that comes directly from Priorat’s llicorella (slate) soils. Flavors of black cherry, cassis, and damson meld with cocoa nibs, black olive tapenade, dried herbs, and a saline, stony edge on the long, persistent finish. The 2022 is approachable with a good decant, but it is clearly built for the long haul—especially in magnum. Expect it to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining complexity, softness, and tertiary nuances of leather, tobacco, and forest floor.

Production
Clos Mogador lies in the heart of Priorat, surrounded by terraced vineyards carved into steep hillsides of llicorella, the region’s distinctive dark slate and quartz soil. This poor, rocky terroir naturally restricts yields and imparts the intense minerality and structure that define the estate’s wines. Vines, many of them old and deeply rooted, are farmed organically with biodynamic principles, and harvesting is done entirely by hand due to the extreme slopes and the quest for meticulous grape selection. Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and sorted rigorously before fermentation, which typically takes place in a combination of stainless steel, wooden vats, or concrete to preserve purity and texture. Traditional methods—such as gentle extraction and careful temperature control—ensure that power never overwhelms balance. After fermentation, the wine is aged in quality French oak barrels for an extended period, allowing the tannins to integrate and the complex aromatics to blossom. The final blend is crafted with precision, then bottled unhurriedly, with magnums reserved for those seeking the most graceful, long-term evolution.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Clos Mogador Magnum is a natural partner for rich, flavorful cuisine that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, herb-crusted rack of lamb, grilled ribeye, or venison with roasted root vegetables. It also shines alongside hearty Catalan and Mediterranean dishes—duck with figs, rabbit stews, roasted suckling pig, or aged Manchego and other firm, mature cheeses. For a more rustic match, try it with charred vegetables, mushroom ragù, or dishes featuring black olives and tapenade. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and its freshness. In its youth, decanting is highly recommended—at least 1–2 hours—to allow the wine to open and soften; for special occasions, a longer, gentle decant in a wide carafe can reveal additional layers. As the wine ages, shorter decanting times will suffice, primarily to separate it from any sediment.

Producer
Clos Mogador was founded in the late 1980s by René Barbier, one of the visionary winemakers who spearheaded Priorat’s modern renaissance. At a time when the region was largely forgotten, Barbier and a small group of pioneers recognized the extraordinary potential of its old vines and dramatic slate terroir. Their work helped propel Priorat onto the world stage and contributed directly to its elevation to DOQ status, Spain’s highest classification for quality. Clos Mogador quickly became a flagship estate, known for its uncompromising standards, low yields, and expressive, terroir-driven blends. The winery is family-run and continues to champion sustainable and organic viticulture, emphasizing respect for the land and meticulous attention from vine to bottle. Over the years, Clos Mogador has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors, cementing its reputation as one of Priorat’s most important and influential producers.
