Description

2022 Clos Figueras Font de la Figuera Blanco is a characterful white Priorat that shows just how refined and gastronomic this rugged region can be. Crafted from an unusual yet harmonious blend of Viognier, Garnacha Blanca and Chenin Blanc, it combines aromatic expressiveness with a distinctly mineral backbone. With 91 points from Robert Parker, it stands out as one of the most intriguing white wines from this famed red-wine territory.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Font de la Figuera Blanco presents a pale, luminous straw color with greenish highlights, hinting at freshness and vibrancy. The nose is beautifully expressive, offering a bouquet of white flowers, crisp apple and ripe pear, layered with fennel, a touch of white pepper and a subtle stony minerality that reflects its Priorat origin. On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied yet precise and well-defined, with juicy orchard fruit, delicate floral tones and a saline, mineral edge. A lively, well-integrated acidity carries the flavors through to a clean, slightly bitter, grapefruit-pith and fennel-tinged finish that adds both structure and gastronomic appeal. Enjoyable now for its freshness and aromatic purity, it should drink beautifully over the next 3–5 years, gaining a touch more complexity and textural depth with short-term cellaring.

Production
The grapes for Font de la Figuera Blanco come from organically farmed vineyards north of the village of Gratallops in Priorat, planted on classic llicorella soils – the dark, flaky slate that gives the region’s wines their intense minerality and tension. The average vine age is around 15 years, and the fruit is carefully harvested by hand and transported in small 20 kg crates to preserve berry integrity. At the winery, the bunches are meticulously sorted on a selection table, with only the best grapes reserved for Font de la Figuera Blanco. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to safeguard aromatic freshness, after which 50–60% of the wine is aged in 500 L French oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel, striking a balance between texture, complexity and crisp, vibrant fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile gastronomic white that shines with seafood and refined, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Pair it with scampi, fruits de mer platters, grilled prawns, seared scallops, fresh crab or delicate white fish, as well as fennel-accented dishes, soft goat’s cheese, poultry in light cream sauces or vegetable-based tapas. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the floral and mineral nuances to emerge. A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a small carafe is sufficient; extended decanting is not necessary, though a quick splash-decant can help the aromatics open up.

Producer
Clos Figueras was established in 1997 when Christopher Cannan, founder of the renowned fine wine merchant Eurovin, recognized the extraordinary potential of Priorat after discovering the area in the 1980s. The estate comprises around 18 hectares of vineyards north of Gratallops, rooted in the region’s emblematic llicorella slate and farmed organically with a strong focus on expressing terroir. While Priorat is historically celebrated for its powerful reds, Clos Figueras has gained a reputation for producing distinctive, high-quality whites such as Font de la Figuera Blanco, which showcase the region’s mineral precision and gastronomic character. Today, the estate is considered one of the key names in modern Priorat, consistently earning critical acclaim and helping define the appellation’s contemporary identity.
