Description
The 2022 Château Trotte Vieille Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a poised and classically styled Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the appellation’s oldest estates. Combining depth, precision, and a refined structure, it offers the kind of elegance that rewards both immediate enjoyment and cellaring. This Grand Cru stands out for its high proportion of Cabernet Franc, bringing lifted aromatics and freshness to the plush Merlot core, and continues a long tradition of ageworthy, terroir-driven wines from this historic property.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue, hinting at concentration and youthful intensity. The nose opens with pure black and red fruits—think blackcurrant, ripe plum, and wild cherry—interwoven with notes of violet, graphite, cigar box, and a delicate touch of cedar and baking spice from its time in oak. Subtle hints of dried herbs, cocoa, and crushed stone appear with air, adding layered complexity.
On the palate, this is both silky and structured: a generous core of dark berry fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and a refreshing, lifted acidity. The Cabernet Franc gives a floral, spicy edge and a sense of verticality, while Merlot contributes texture and mid-palate richness. Tobacco leaf, licorice, and mineral notes echo on a long, persistent finish. Well-built and balanced, this vintage has very good aging potential; it should drink beautifully from the mid-term but will continue to develop further nuance over 10–20 years in a proper cellar.
Production
Château Trotte Vieille sits on the limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, an area famed for producing wines of elegance, tension, and aromatic finesse. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, rooted in thin soils over limestone bedrock that encourages deep root systems and natural concentration. Harvesting is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve fruit purity. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to emphasize finesse over power, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion new) to integrate tannins and add subtle spice without overshadowing the character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, and veal in truffle or mushroom sauces. It also works well with game birds, rich poultry, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range and textural detail. For young bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open, while more mature bottles may need only a gentle, brief decant to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Trotte Vieille is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Émilion, with historical records dating back several centuries and a long-standing reputation for producing refined, Cabernet Franc–influenced wines. Classified among the leading properties of the appellation, it is known for its venerable old vines—particularly of Cabernet Franc—that contribute to the wine’s aromatic complexity and longevity. Over time, significant investments in the vineyards and cellar have elevated quality, reinforcing Trotte Vieille’s status as a benchmark estate on the Saint-Émilion plateau and a trusted name for collectors seeking classically styled, ageworthy Bordeaux.
