Description
The 2022 Château Saint-Pierre Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet polished expression of left-bank Bordeaux from one of Saint-Julien’s most discreet but consistently excellent estates. Classified as a Fourth Growth in the historic 1855 Classification, this wine captures the ripe concentration and structure of the 2022 vintage while retaining the hallmark finesse of Saint-Julien. It’s a compelling choice for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a classic Médoc profile with modern precision and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and dark cherry at the core, supported by notes of cedar, graphite, and cigar box, alongside hints of violet, cocoa, and a touch of baking spice from quality oak.
On the palate, this is a structured, full-bodied Saint-Julien, combining ripe fruit richness with refined tannins and a fresh, balanced acidity. Expect concentrated cassis and black plum, framed by notes of pencil lead, tobacco leaf, and vanilla, with subtle savoury undertones of earth and dried herbs adding complexity. The tannic backbone is firm yet finely grained, promising excellent cellar potential. While it can be approached in its youth with adequate aeration, this wine is clearly built to evolve gracefully over 10–20 years, gaining tertiary nuances of truffle, leather, and cigar box with time.
Production
Château Saint-Pierre lies on the classic gravelly terraces of Saint-Julien, where deep gravel over sand and clay provides ideal drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux blending partners. The vineyard is typically planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, which together contribute structure, depth, and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to ensure careful selection in the vineyard and on sorting tables. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, tannin, and aroma, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (with a significant proportion new) to integrate the oak influence, refine the tannins, and build the wine’s signature elegance and longevity.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Saint-Julien is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte with pommes frites, venison, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with richer poultry dishes, mushroom-based recipes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to best express its aromatics and balance. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as the wine ages and gains complexity, a shorter decant of around 30 minutes is usually sufficient to let it fully shine.
Producer
Château Saint-Pierre is one of the more discreet classified growths of Saint-Julien, yet it holds an illustrious history dating back several centuries and was recognized as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc. The estate has undergone significant investment and revival in recent decades, elevating quality and consistency while maintaining a classic, terroir-driven style. Today, it is regarded as a benchmark for serious, ageworthy Saint-Julien, offering depth, refinement, and authenticity that reflect both its gravel terroir and its longstanding place among Bordeaux’s Grand Cru Classé châteaux.
