Description

The 2022 Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a powerful, modern-classic Pauillac that showcases the depth and energy of an outstanding Bordeaux vintage. As a renowned Second Growth from the 1855 Classification, Pichon Baron consistently delivers wines of structure, intensity, and age‑worthy elegance. The 2022 release stands out for its exceptional concentration, polished tannins, and precise balance, capturing the essence of great Cabernet-driven left-bank claret.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pichon Baron shows a deep, nearly opaque garnet-purple hue, signaling both richness and youth. The nose is intensely expressive, offering layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cassis intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle violet, supported by hints of dark chocolate, warm spices, and pencil shavings from fine French oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with a core of ripe black fruits framed by firm yet impressively refined tannins. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, and plum are lifted by mineral notes and a vibrant, fresh acidity that keeps the wine poised and energetic. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of cedar, cocoa, and crushed stones. Built for longevity, this 2022 has considerable aging potential: it will reward patience over 15–30 years, gradually developing more complexity, truffle, and cigar-box nuances as it matures.

Production
Château Pichon Longueville Baron is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, with vineyards ideally positioned on deep gravel ridges overlooking the Gironde estuary. This classic Médoc terroir—well-drained gravel over limestone and clay—favors Cabernet Sauvignon, giving wines with great structure, aromatic precision, and a distinctive graphite-mineral profile. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and tannin finesse, followed by aging in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine gains additional complexity, texture, and integration before bottling.

Food & Serving
This 2022 Pichon Baron is a classic partner for richly flavored meats and refined French cuisine. Think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast, venison, or beef Wellington, as well as hearty dishes like braised short ribs, cassoulet, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Manchego, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to fully develop. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; as it ages, a shorter decant—mainly to remove any sediment—will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the historic grandes maisons of Pauillac, classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate traces its origins to the late 17th century and has long been recognized for producing some of the most profound and long-lived wines of the Médoc. Situated across from Château Latour, on some of the appellation’s finest gravelly slopes, Pichon Baron has invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology over recent decades, elevating quality to consistently outstanding levels. Today, the château is considered a benchmark for Pauillac, regularly earning high critical acclaim and a place in the cellars of serious Bordeaux collectors worldwide.
