Description
The 2022 Château Phélan Ségur Saint-Estèphe is a poised and polished left-bank Bordeaux that captures the richness of the vintage while staying true to its cool-climate, maritime roots. This refined red marries power with precision, offering generous dark fruit wrapped in the estate’s signature structure and elegance. Long admired for over-delivering in its appellation, Phélan Ségur continues its impressive run with a wine that will both delight in youth and reward patience in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Phélan Ségur shows a deep, vivid garnet-purple color with an almost opaque core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are underpinned by notes of graphite, cedar shavings, violets and a subtle dried herb character, with fine touches of cocoa, crushed stone and a hint of pencil lead that speak clearly of classic Saint-Estèphe.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a sleek, modern texture supported by firm yet polished tannins. The dark berry fruit is joined by plum and cassis, framed by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lifted and energetic. Savory nuances—tobacco leaf, spice, a touch of espresso and wet gravel—unfold with air, giving depth and complexity. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit and minerality. This 2022 has the structure to age gracefully for 12–20 years or more, yet its refined tannins and purity of fruit will make it approachable after a few years in bottle.
Production
Château Phélan Ségur’s vineyards lie on the gravelly hillsides of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary, whose moderating influence protects the vines and promotes long, even ripening. The soils here are a classic mix of deep gravel over clay and limestone, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot often contributing to the blend. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with a strong emphasis on careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannic structure, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a proportion new each year) that adds subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the wine’s terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Estèphe is a natural partner for classic red meat dishes such as roast lamb, grilled ribeye, beef tenderloin or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, duck, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Phélan Ségur, founded in the early 19th century by Irishman Bernard Phelan, is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most respected and consistently high-performing estates. Over the decades, the château has built a reputation for crafting wines that combine the appellation’s traditional power and structure with increasing finesse and precision. Its well-situated vineyards, bordering some of the most prestigious properties in the Médoc, and a sustained focus on quality in the vineyard and cellar have raised Phélan Ségur to near–classed growth status in the eyes of many collectors and critics. Today, the estate is widely recognized as a benchmark for modern Saint-Estèphe, offering age-worthy wines that remain comparatively accessible in the world of top-tier Bordeaux.
