Description
The 2022 Château Pape Clément Pessac-Léognan Blanc is a striking example of modern Bordeaux white, uniting opulence with precision. Crafted from a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and complimentary white varieties, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellar potential. As one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, Pape Clément brings centuries of know‑how to this luxurious white, balancing rich fruit with a sculpted, mineral backbone.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pape Clément Blanc shows a bright, luminous straw-gold color with green highlights, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe citrus and pink grapefruit meet white peach, juicy pear and tropical notes of pineapple and passion fruit, supported by delicate floral tones, subtle vanilla, toast and a touch of smoky, flinty minerality.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, textured white with real tension. The Sauvignon Blanc brings vibrant acidity and citrus zest, while Sémillon adds depth, waxy weight and a creamy mid-palate. Expect flavors of lemon curd, lime peel, stone fruit and ripe orchard fruit, wrapped in fine, well-integrated oak, with notes of toasted almond and baking spice. The finish is long and saline, with a lingering, mouthwatering freshness that keeps the richness in perfect check. While already seductive in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential over 8–12 years, and possibly longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Pape Clément lies in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, on gravelly soils over clay and limestone that are ideal for both red and white Bordeaux. The warm, well-drained gravel promotes ripeness and aromatic intensity in the white grapes, while the underlying clay and limestone help retain freshness and balance in warmer vintages such as 2022. The fruit is typically harvested by hand in small crates, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted, gently pressed and vinified in temperature-controlled conditions, with fermentation and élevage often taking place in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels (and sometimes concrete eggs or small vats), allowing for bâtonnage on fine lees to build texture and complexity while preserving purity of fruit and tension.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Pape Clément Blanc is a natural partner for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with shellfish such as lobster, langoustines, scallops and prawns, as well as oysters and crab. Rich fish dishes—turbot, halibut or sea bass with beurre blanc or citrus beurre monté—work particularly well, as do roasted chicken, veal in cream sauce, and dishes featuring morels or truffle. It also complements fine cheeses, especially aged Comté, hard goat’s cheese and delicate bloomy rinds. Serve well-chilled but not icy, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromas to fully open. Young bottles can benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a few gentle swirls in a large white wine glass to reveal their full aromatic range and texture.
Producer
Château Pape Clément is one of Bordeaux’s oldest documented wine estates, with origins dating back to the 13th century. It takes its name from Bertrand de Goth, who became Pope Clément V and introduced viticulture to this historic Pessac terroir. Today, under the stewardship of Bernard Magrez, Pape Clément is regarded as a flagship property of Pessac-Léognan, known for producing both top-tier reds and some of the most sought-after dry whites in Bordeaux. The estate has invested heavily in vineyard precision, parcel selection and state-of-the-art winemaking, earning consistently high critical acclaim and helping to cement Pessac-Léognan’s reputation as a benchmark region for complex, ageworthy white wines.
