Description
The 2022 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet refined expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, coming from a vintage already hailed for its concentration and vibrancy. This wine combines Palmer’s hallmark silkiness with the depth and structure of a warm, sun-filled year, making it a compelling choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike. As a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification that routinely performs at First Growth level, Château Palmer has long been synonymous with sensual, Merlot-rich Margaux of remarkable elegance and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Palmer shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue with a vibrant rim, hinting at both intensity and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe blackcurrant and black cherry at the core, wrapped in notes of blackberry compote, violet, and rose petal. Subtle nuances of cedar, graphite, dark chocolate, and exotic spice emerge with air, supported by a fine vein of mineral freshness.
On the palate, this is rich yet poised, with a velvety texture that glides across the mouth. Dense black fruits—cassis, plum, and black cherry—are framed by ultra-fine, ripe tannins and a precise acidity that keeps the wine lively and balanced despite its concentration. Hints of mocha, tobacco leaf, and warm earth unfold on the long, persistent finish, suggesting remarkable complexity to come. While already seductive in its youth, the 2022 Palmer is built for the long haul; with proper cellaring, it should evolve beautifully over 20–30 years or more, gaining tertiary notes of truffle, cigar box, and leather.
Production
Château Palmer lies on the gravelly terraces of Margaux, where deep layers of Garonne gravel, mixed with sand and clay, provide superb drainage and naturally restrict yields, concentrating flavor and aromatics in the grapes. The estate is renowned for its relatively high proportion of Merlot in the blend alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot, all farmed with meticulous attention—today under organic and biodynamic principles. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel, by hand, allowing for precise selection at optimal ripeness, which is particularly vital in a warm, concentrated vintage like 2022. In the cellar, grapes are sorted carefully, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extractions to preserve finesse and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it gains texture, complexity, and harmony before bottling.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Palmer is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that echo its depth and structure. Classic pairings include roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or venison, as well as dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, or root vegetables. It can also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a mature English Cheddar. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F), allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass. Decanting is recommended—about 2–3 hours for young bottles—to help the bouquet unfurl and soften the tannins; mature bottles (once well-aged) will benefit from a shorter, more gentle decant to separate from any sediment.
Producer
Château Palmer, located in the heart of Margaux on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, is one of the region’s most celebrated estates, classified as a Third Growth in 1855 but often considered on par with the greatest names of the Médoc. The property traces its modern history back to the early 19th century and takes its name from Charles Palmer, an English general who expanded and elevated the estate. Over the decades, Château Palmer has built a reputation for producing some of the most sensual and perfumed wines of Margaux, distinguished by a higher proportion of Merlot than is typical in the appellation, which lends a distinctive suppleness and richness. In recent years, the château has embraced organic and biodynamic viticulture, further sharpening the expression of its terroir. Its consistency across vintages, combined with a string of highly acclaimed wines, has cemented Palmer’s status as a reference point for collectors seeking both opulence and elegance in Bordeaux.
