Description
The 2022 Château Nénin Pomerol is a polished, modern Right Bank Bordeaux that marries intensity with classic Pomerol elegance. Crafted predominantly from Merlot, this wine captures the richness and depth of the exceptional 2022 vintage while remaining poised and refined. Long considered a reference estate in Pomerol, Château Nénin is prized for offering a more structured, age-worthy expression of the appellation, often compared in spirit to the great wines of the Left Bank.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Nénin presents a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, suggesting both concentration and youth. The nose opens with ripe black plum, blackberry and dark cherry, layered with notes of violets, graphite, cocoa nib, and a subtle hint of cedar and spice from well-judged oak. As it unfurls, you may also find touches of licorice, tobacco leaf and a mineral, almost saline edge that speaks to its terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a core of succulent black and blue fruits framed by fine-grained tannins. The texture is silky but firm, giving the wine a serious, architectural feel and promising excellent development in bottle. Flavors of plum compote, cassis and black cherry mingle with dark chocolate, espresso, and a whisper of dried herbs, leading into a long, precise finish marked by freshness and minerality. While already captivating in its youth with a brief decant, the 2022 Château Nénin has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining in complexity and nuance over time.
Production
Château Nénin sits on the prestigious plateau and slopes of Pomerol in Bordeaux, where clay and gravel soils over a limestone subsoil provide ideal conditions for Merlot to achieve both power and finesse, complemented by Cabernet Franc’s aromatic lift and structure. The estate typically practices meticulous parcel selection and hand harvesting, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it to the winery. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir character, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new each year) to add complexity, polish the tannins, and support long-term aging without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Nénin is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or veal chops with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom risotto, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften; as the wine matures and gains bottle complexity, a shorter decant or careful service directly from the bottle will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Nénin is one of Pomerol’s historic estates, with roots dating back to the 19th century and a reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most structured, classically styled wines. Today, it is owned and managed by the Delon family, who are also behind the renowned Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, bringing a Left Bank rigor and precision to this Right Bank property. Under their stewardship, Nénin has undergone extensive vineyard and cellar improvements, elevating it to the upper echelon of Pomerol producers. Known for its age-worthy, terroir-driven expressions that bridge richness and refinement, Château Nénin plays a significant role in showcasing Pomerol as a source of serious, collectible Bordeaux.
