Description
The 2022 Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé is a powerful, classically structured Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most revered estates. In this warm, concentrated vintage, Montrose delivers a wine of impressive depth, precision, and energy, built for both serious collectors and lovers of ageworthy claret. Ranked as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Classification, Château Montrose has long been considered a “super second,” often rivaling the First Growths in pedigree and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Montrose shows a deep, nearly opaque garnet-purple hue, signaling its intensity and youth. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with blackcurrant, cassis, and ripe blackberry, layered with graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, and hints of crushed violets and dark chocolate. Subtle notes of pencil shavings, warm spices, and a touch of earth underscore its classic Saint-Estèphe personality.
On the palate, this is a structured, full-bodied wine with a core of dense black fruit wrapped in finely knit, firm but polished tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry mingle with savory notes of cigar box, crushed rock, and a faint saline edge from the gravelly terroir. The acidity is vibrant for such a ripe year, giving the wine lift and precision, while the finish is long, layered, and persistent, with lingering graphite and dark berry tones. The 2022 Montrose has significant aging potential; while it can be approached after 8–10 years, it will reward cellaring for 20–30 years or more in good conditions, gradually gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and forest floor.
Production
Château Montrose sits on one of Saint-Estèphe’s greatest terroirs: a deep gravel hillock overlooking the Gironde estuary, with excellent natural drainage and a subsoil of clay and sand that favors Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional concentration and finesse. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work, using high-density plantings and careful canopy management, with harvesting carried out by hand in small lots to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. In the cellar, each parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise blending later on. The 2022 vintage, typically a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) to enhance structure, complexity, and aging capacity, while preserving the wine’s purity of fruit and mineral backbone.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Montrose is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with herbs, braised beef short ribs, or game birds like duck and pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. For young bottles, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; older, cellared bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter time to preserve their delicate tertiary nuances.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe and the Médoc as a whole, officially classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in 1855. Established in the 19th century on what was once considered marginal land, the estate quickly earned a reputation for producing some of the most powerful, long-lived wines in Bordeaux. Under modern stewardship, Montrose has undergone significant investment in both vineyard and cellar, with a strong focus on precision viticulture and sustainability, further elevating quality. Today, it is widely regarded as a “super second,” often cited alongside the First Growths for its consistency, depth, and aging potential, and it remains a reference point for the distinctive, structured style of Saint-Estèphe.
