Description

The 2022 Château Monbousquet Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a modern, opulent expression of Right Bank Bordeaux, crafted from a Merlot‑driven blend with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from one of Saint‑Émilion’s best‑exposed gravelly terraces, this wine is known for its generous fruit, velvety texture, and polished structure. Elevated to Grand Cru Classé status in 2006, Monbousquet has become a reference point for powerful yet refined Saint‑Émilion wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Monbousquet shows a deep, saturated ruby‑purple color, hinting at its intensity and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and cassis interwoven with notes of violet, dark chocolate, espresso, and warm baking spices, alongside a subtle graphite and cedar undertone. On the palate, this is a rich, full‑bodied Saint‑Émilion with plush, fine‑grained tannins and a generous core of dark fruit. Ripe plum, blackcurrant, and macerated cherry are lifted by hints of licorice, mocha, and sweet tobacco, with a fresh mineral line adding balance and length. The finish is long, smooth, and slightly spicy, suggesting excellent aging potential. While approachable in its youth after a short decant, this 2022 vintage should continue to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and cigar box over time.

Production
Château Monbousquet’s vines lie on the southwestern plateau of Saint‑Émilion, where deep gravel, sand, and clay soils provide superb drainage and natural concentration, particularly well suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate practices careful, plot‑by‑plot viticulture with green harvesting and meticulous sorting at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe grapes are used. The fruit is typically picked by hand, then vinified parcel by parcel in temperature‑controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is aged in a high proportion of French oak barrels, much of it new, which contributes to its signature richness, polish, and aromatic complexity while still allowing the character of the vintage and vineyard to shine through.

Food & Serving
This 2022 Saint‑Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roasted lamb, beef ribeye, duck breast, venison, or slow‑braised short ribs. It also works well with earthy, truffle‑accented cuisine, mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structure. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Monbousquet is a historic Saint‑Émilion estate whose origins date back to the 16th century, but it has become especially renowned since its acquisition and revitalization in the 1990s. Under the stewardship of Gérard Perse, Monbousquet underwent a complete renaissance, with extensive vineyard replanting, yield control, and modernized winemaking, transforming it into one of the appellation’s most recognizable names. The château was promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the 2006 Saint‑Émilion classification, underscoring its quality and regional importance. Today, Château Monbousquet is celebrated for its powerful, contemporary style and its role in helping to elevate Saint‑Émilion’s global reputation for premium, terroir‑driven wines.
