Description
The 2022 Château Lynch-Bages Pauillac Grand Cru Classé is a powerful, modern classic from one of Bordeaux’s most consistently admired estates. Crafted in a ripe yet beautifully structured vintage, this red wine captures the depth, energy and finesse that have made Lynch-Bages a favorite among collectors worldwide. Expect a wine that is impressive in its youth yet clearly built for decades of graceful development.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Lynch-Bages shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful intensity. The nose opens with a vivid core of blackcurrant and blackberry, layered with cassis liqueur, dark cherry and graphite, followed by more subtle notes of cedar, cigar box, crushed violets and hints of spice and cocoa from careful oak aging.
On the palate, this Pauillac is full-bodied and densely packed, with ripe yet firm tannins that give it a commanding structure. Flavors of blackcurrant, plum and black cherry are intertwined with pencil lead, tobacco leaf, roasted coffee bean and a touch of licorice. The acidity is fresh and precise, keeping the wine lively despite its richness and alcohol. The finish is long, savory and mineral-tinged, with lingering notes of dark fruit and cedar. This is a wine with significant aging potential: while it can be approached after several years in the cellar, the 2022 Lynch-Bages is ideally suited to evolve and gain complexity over 15–30 years or more in good conditions.
Production
Château Lynch-Bages lies on the gravelly plateau of Pauillac, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay offer textbook conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The 2022 vintage, marked by warmth and sunshine, produced small, concentrated berries, yet the estate’s well-drained terroir and careful vineyard management preserved excellent freshness. The vineyard—planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—is harvested parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure optimal ripeness and rigorous selection of bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise extraction of color, tannin and aromatic substance without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it gains additional complexity, polish and structure before blending and bottling at the château.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Lynch-Bages is a natural partner for richly flavored, classic dishes. Think roast or grilled lamb, entrecôte or ribeye steak, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised beef and veal, as well as truffle-infused dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based preparations that highlight its earthy, savory side. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; as it matures in bottle, a shorter decant, primarily to remove sediment, will usually suffice.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages is one of the most celebrated properties of Pauillac, classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc. Located just outside the town of Pauillac on the Bages plateau, the estate has, over the past several decades, gained a reputation that far surpasses its original ranking, often being mentioned alongside higher-classed neighbors. Under the stewardship of the Cazes family since the mid-20th century, Lynch-Bages has become synonymous with reliably powerful, ageworthy claret that still offers charm and approachability. The château has invested significantly in both vineyard and cellar improvements, helping to elevate quality and achieve numerous highly regarded vintages that are now staples of serious Bordeaux cellars around the world.
