Description
Echo de Lynch-Bages 2022 is the characterful second wine of the famed Château Lynch-Bages, offering a more approachable expression of this Pauillac estate in its youth. Crafted from classic Bordeaux varietals and sourced from the same privileged terroir as the Grand Vin, it delivers structure, depth and polish without requiring decades of cellaring. This cuvée continues the Lynch-Bages tradition of powerful, Cabernet-driven wines that have made the château a benchmark in the Médoc since the 19th century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Echo de Lynch-Bages shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, reflecting the concentration of the vintage. The nose is generous and refined, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and plum, intertwined with hints of cedar, graphite, violets and a touch of baking spice and cocoa from oak aging.
On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, velvety texture and finely structured tannins. Dark berry fruit dominates, supported by notes of cassis, cigar box, dried herbs and a subtle minerality typical of Pauillac. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving lift and precision to the ripe fruit. While Echo is designed to be enjoyed earlier than the Grand Vin, the 2022 has sufficient backbone to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softer tannins with time in bottle.
Production
Echo de Lynch-Bages is sourced from vines growing on the deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that define the great terroirs of Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. These well-draining, heat-retentive gravels are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, promoting slow, even ripening and excellent concentration. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel, often by hand, to ensure optimal maturity and careful selection of bunches. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannin texture. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion of which are second-fill from the Grand Vin), allowing it to gain aromatic complexity and structure while maintaining an accessible, generous style.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Echo de Lynch-Bages is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steak, duck breast, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or mature cheddar, and with dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to soften the tannins and let the bouquet fully unfold, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates, classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc. Located just outside the village of Pauillac, the property has been owned and revitalized by the Cazes family since the mid-20th century, becoming renowned for producing wines that punch well above their official classification. Lynch-Bages is celebrated for its powerful yet refined Cabernet-based blends, long-lived wines that have earned a devoted following around the world. Echo de Lynch-Bages, the château’s second wine, allows wine lovers to experience the signature style of this iconic Bordeaux producer in a more approachable and earlier-drinking form, while still reflecting the pedigree of its illustrious origins.
