Description

Château Léoville Poyferré is one of Saint-Julien’s most admired Second Growth estates, and the 2022 vintage in magnum format gives this Grand Cru Classé even greater appeal for collectors and enthusiasts. Known for its depth, polish, and remarkable consistency, it offers the kind of left-bank Bordeaux that blends classic structure with generous, modern charm.

Tasting Notes
The 2022 Léoville Poyferré typically shows a deep, intense color in the glass, hinting at the concentration within. Aromatically, expect layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, graphite, and subtle spice, with the oak woven in rather than dominating. On the palate, it is likely to be full-bodied and refined, with ripe dark fruit, firm yet supple tannins, and the fresh, mineral line that gives Saint-Julien its reputation for balance. The magnum format is especially attractive here, as it supports slower, more graceful evolution; this is a wine with excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over decades.

Production
The estate is located in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve both ripeness and precision. Although the grape composition for this specific bottle is not provided, the château’s wines are traditionally built around Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvesting is typically carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, followed by careful sorting and vinification designed to preserve purity, structure, and aromatic complexity. The result is a wine that reflects both the distinctive terroir of Léoville Poyferré and the estate’s meticulous approach in the cellar.

Food & Serving
This is a classic partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, ribeye, duck breast, and rich dishes such as braised short ribs or game with a wine sauce. Mature hard cheeses also work well. Serve at around 16–18°C and, if opening young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to unfold; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only if needed.

Producer
Château Léoville-Poyferré is a historic Saint-Julien estate with roots in the famed Léoville holdings that were divided in the 19th century. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has built a strong reputation for producing wines of power, elegance, and remarkable longevity. Today it is regarded as one of the benchmark producers of the appellation, with a long record of critical acclaim and collector interest.
