Description
2022 Château Le Crock is a characterful red Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe, crafted in a ripe yet classically structured vintage. Sitting just across the road from the famed Château Léoville Poyferré’s vineyards and sharing the same family ownership, it delivers serious Left Bank pedigree at a more approachable price. Classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, this wine offers the depth, precision and aging potential that have made Saint-Estèphe a favorite among collectors and classic Bordeaux lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Le Crock shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling its youthful concentration and energy. The nose opens with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and dark cherry, followed by layers of graphite, cedar, crushed violets and a touch of tobacco leaf. Subtle notes of cocoa, spice and warm stones hint at its gravelly terroir and careful oak aging.
On the palate, this is a structured yet polished Saint-Estèphe, with a core of dark fruit framed by firm but refined tannins. Flavors of cassis, black plum and blackberry are lifted by fresh acidity, while hints of pencil shavings, licorice, cocoa nib and savory herbs add complexity on the long, persistent finish. Youthful and still tightly knit, the 2022 has the stuffing to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, but can be enjoyed earlier with a generous decant.
Production
Château Le Crock lies in the northern Médoc commune of Saint-Estèphe, where deep gravel soils mixed with clay help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve excellent ripeness while retaining freshness and structure. The mild, maritime climate of Bordeaux, combined with the warmth of the 2022 growing season, produced small, concentrated berries with thick skins and intense flavor. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, often by hand, allowing a strict selection of only the best fruit. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve aromatic purity and fine tannins. It is then aged in French oak barrels (with a proportion of new oak) to add texture, spice and complexity without overwhelming the character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
2022 Château Le Crock is a natural match for classic, savory dishes—think roast lamb with rosemary, grilled entrecôte, duck breast, or braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s aromatic complexity to unfold; as it matures, a shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Le Crock is a historic Saint-Estèphe estate, long recognized for offering serious Médoc quality and character. Owned by the Cuvelier family—who are also behind the highly regarded Château Léoville Poyferré in Saint-Julien—the property has benefited from significant investment in both vineyard management and cellar techniques. Elevated in recent years to the top-tier Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel category, Le Crock is now firmly established as one of the leading names in its appellation, known for producing age-worthy, classically structured wines that reflect the power and minerality of Saint-Estèphe while maintaining elegance and modern precision.
