Description
The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge is a modern, polished expression of Pessac-Léognan that captures the energy and ripeness of this highly regarded vintage. Combining classic Bordeaux structure with generous, ripe fruit, it offers impressive depth and refinement while remaining approachable in its youth. This is a wine crafted for those who appreciate both tradition and contemporary precision in claret.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, signaling concentration and youthful intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, violets, and a touch of warm spice and cocoa from quality French oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, velvety texture and finely knit tannins. Ripe dark berry fruit is framed by hints of tobacco leaf, toasted oak, pencil shavings and a subtle mineral edge that reflects its gravelly terroir. The acidity is fresh and well-judged, bringing lift and precision to the rich fruit core, while the finish is long, elegant and gently savory. Built with balance and structure, this 2022 has excellent aging potential; it will reward 8–15 years in the cellar, continuing to develop complexity and polish with time.
Production
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion lies in the heart of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux’s Graves, on classic well-drained gravel and sandy soils over a clay and limestone subsoil—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate typically harvests parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often with a mix of mechanical picking and careful hand sorting at the winery to ensure only the healthiest berries make it into the vats. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for precise extraction of color and tannin while preserving aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, to add structure, texture and subtle spice without overwhelming the distinctive Pessac-Léognan character.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef ribeye, duck breast, game birds, and richly flavored stews like boeuf bourguignon. It also complements hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda and mature Cheddar, as well as earthy mushroom dishes and truffle-infused recipes. Serve at around 16–18°C to allow the bouquet and structure to fully express themselves. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics, while more mature bottles can be gently opened and served with minimal aeration.
Producer
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is an historic estate in Pessac-Léognan, in Bordeaux’s Graves region, with roots dating back to the 19th century. Once known simply as Château Haut-Brion-Larrivet, it benefited from the growing prestige of the Graves terroir and has seen significant investment and qualitative improvement over the last few decades. Today, Larrivet Haut-Brion is recognized as one of the serious, reliable names of Pessac-Léognan, producing both red and white wines that punch above their classification. The estate’s dedication to careful vineyard management, terroir-driven winemaking and thoughtful use of oak has earned it consistent critical praise and a loyal following among enthusiasts seeking high-quality, characterful Bordeaux without the grand cru classé price tag.
