Description
The 2022 Château Labégorce Margaux is a refined expression of one of Bordeaux’s most beloved appellations, capturing the warmth and intensity of the vintage while staying true to Margaux’s hallmark elegance. Crafted from a classic blend of Left Bank varieties, it offers structure, perfume, and finesse in equal measure. Situated on revered gravelly soils just north of the village of Margaux, Château Labégorce has a long history of producing wines that deliver both pedigree and pleasure, and 2022 looks set to be a particularly exciting release.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Labégorce Margaux shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and dark cherries, intertwined with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and a touch of sweet spice from well-judged oak. Subtle hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and dried herbs emerge with a little air, adding complexity.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Margaux with a polished, silky texture. The Cabernet-driven structure provides a firm but fine-grained backbone, while Merlot adds flesh and supple fruit. Flavors of cassis, plum, and black cherry are complemented by nuances of pencil shavings, baking spice, and a delicate floral lift. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, carrying the wine through to a long, precise finish with lingering notes of dark fruit and minerality. While already approachable with a short decant, the 2022 has the balance and tannic structure to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, and potentially longer in good cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Labégorce draws on a mosaic of classic Margaux terroirs, with deep gravel and sandy-gravel soils over a subsoil of clay and limestone that naturally restrict vigor and promote concentration in the berries. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller proportions of varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all carefully tended through the growing season with green harvesting and sorting to ensure optimal ripeness. The 2022 vintage, marked by warmth and sunshine, demanded meticulous vineyard management to preserve freshness and balance. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimum maturity, then sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity and precision. Aging takes place in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new), where the wine gains texture, complexity, and subtle spice without overshadowing the natural character of the fruit and the Margaux terroir.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Labégorce Margaux is a versatile partner at the table and shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, duck breast, or beef tenderloin with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. For the best experience, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the floral and graphite notes to emerge. As the wine ages, a gentle decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Labégorce is an historic Margaux estate with roots stretching back several centuries, long recognized for its well-situated vineyards on some of the appellation’s finest gravelly terroirs. Over the past decades, significant investment and careful vineyard and cellar work have elevated the quality of the wines, placing Labégorce firmly among the value standouts of Margaux. The estate has become known for producing wines that marry depth and structure with the perfume and finesse that define the region, often overdelivering for their classification and attracting growing attention from critics and collectors alike. In promising vintages such as 2022, Château Labégorce is particularly well placed to showcase just how compelling Margaux can be.
