Description

2022 Château Haut-Bailly Cru Classé Graves is a poised and powerful expression of top-flight Pessac-Léognan, uniting classic Bordeaux elegance with the richness of a warm, high-quality vintage. This is a wine crafted for serious cellaring, yet with a seductive charm that will captivate even in its youth. Classified among the great growths of Graves, Haut-Bailly has long been revered for its seamless balance of refinement, structure and complexity—traits that shine clearly in this 2022 release.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Haut-Bailly shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, followed by notes of plum, graphite, cedar, and warm spices, along with hints of violets, pipe tobacco, and a delicate smoky-mineral edge so typical of great Graves. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet exquisitely balanced, with fine-grained tannins that are firm but polished. Layers of dark berries, cassis, and black cherry glide across the tongue, wrapped in subtle tones of cocoa, pencil shavings, crushed stones, and savory herbs. The acidity is fresh and precise, keeping the wine lively despite its depth and power, and the finish is long, persistent, and remarkably pure. Built for longevity, this 2022 has excellent aging potential; it will reward 8–10 years of patience and continue to evolve gracefully for two to three decades in a good cellar.

Production
Château Haut-Bailly lies on one of the finest gravel ridges of Pessac-Léognan in the historic Graves area of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils mixed with sand and pockets of clay provide superb drainage and encourage the roots to dig deep. This exceptional terroir, combined with old vines (some parcels are over a century old), naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand, to ensure careful selection in the vineyard and again at the winery. The wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise management of extraction to capture both finesse and structure. After fermentation, the grand vin is aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for an extended period, during which it is carefully monitored and blended to express the estate’s hallmark elegance, complexity, and sense of place.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Haut-Bailly is a natural partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, duck breast, venison, or classic Bordeaux pairings like entrecôte à la bordelaise. It also complements earthy preparations featuring wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and supple texture. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to soften the structure and allow the bouquet to unfurl; as it matures, a shorter decant or gentle settling in the glass will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Haut-Bailly is one of the great historic estates of Graves, with documented viticultural roots dating back to the 17th century. Located in Pessac-Léognan, on the left bank just south of Bordeaux, it has earned a reputation for producing some of the most refined and long-lived wines of the region, recognized as a Cru Classé de Graves in the 1959 classification. Over the decades, Haut-Bailly has been celebrated for its unique style—combining the structure and classicism of the Médoc with the supple texture and subtle smokiness that define great Graves. Under long-term, quality-focused ownership and meticulous vineyard stewardship, the château has consistently garnered praise from critics and collectors alike, cementing its position as a benchmark for elegance and terroir expression in Bordeaux.
