Description
The 2022 Château Grand Puy Ducasse Pauillac Grand Cru Classé is a powerful and classically styled red Bordeaux from one of Pauillac’s historic Fifth Growth estates. Crafted in a ripe, concentrated vintage, it combines the structure and age-worthiness that Pauillac is famous for with a modern polish and purity of fruit. This Grand Cru Classé, whose origins date back to the 17th century, continues to showcase the timeless appeal of Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the great gravel terraces of the Left Bank.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Grand Puy Ducasse shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose opens with intense blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, followed by layers of graphite, cedar box, cigar tobacco, crushed violets, and a touch of dark chocolate and spice.
On the palate, this is a structured, full-bodied Pauillac with a firm backbone of ripe, fine-grained tannins. Dense cassis, black cherry, and plum are framed by notes of pencil shavings, cedar, licorice, and a subtle saline minerality that speaks to its terroir. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving lift and precision to the rich fruit, while the finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of graphite and dark berries. Built for the long haul, this 2022 has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity and secondary notes of leather, truffle, and forest floor with time in bottle.
Production
Château Grand Puy Ducasse draws its character from prime Pauillac terroir: deep, well-drained gravel soils over a mix of sand and clay, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The vineyards lie on the famous “croupes de graves” (gravelly rises) close to some of Pauillac’s most illustrious neighbors, benefiting from excellent exposure and natural drainage, as well as the tempering influence of the nearby Gironde estuary. Harvesting is typically carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful selection of the healthiest, most perfectly ripened grapes. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is combined with modern precision: temperature-controlled fermentation in vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to refine the tannins, enhance structure, and frame the pure, dark fruit without overwhelming it.
Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Classic pairings include roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, beef Wellington, venison, and other game, as well as slow-braised dishes like beef cheeks or short ribs. It also works beautifully with hard, aged cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to best express its aromatics and structure. For current or near-term drinking, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to open up the nose and soften the tannins; with bottle age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will help the wine show at its best.
Producer
Château Grand Puy Ducasse is a historic Pauillac estate, classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) in the landmark 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when the Grand-Puy plateau was first recognized for its exceptional gravel terroir. Over time, the estate’s vineyards have been assembled into a patchwork of choice parcels scattered across some of Pauillac’s finest sites, contributing to the wine’s depth and complexity. Long respected for its classically structured, age-worthy reds, the château has in recent decades benefited from extensive investment in vineyard management and cellar technology, helping to elevate quality and consistency. Today, Château Grand Puy Ducasse is regarded as a reliable and increasingly sought-after reference for serious Pauillac, offering Grand Cru Classé pedigree and a distinctive, terroir-driven style.
