Description
The 2022 Château Fleur Cardinale Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a plush, modern Right Bank Bordeaux that balances impressive concentration with refined elegance. Sourced from clay-limestone slopes on the cooler, eastern side of Saint-Émilion, it captures all the ripeness of the warm 2022 vintage while retaining a vital core of freshness. As a classified growth, it offers serious pedigree and age-worthiness, yet remains seductively approachable in its youth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Fleur Cardinale shows a deep, saturated purple-ruby hue with inky reflections, hinting at both density and richness. The nose is expressive and polished, with layers of ripe black cherry, cassis and plum compote, lifted by notes of violets, graphite and sweet spice—think vanilla, clove and a touch of cocoa from well-judged oak. Subtle hints of licorice, espresso and crushed stone add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, velvety Saint-Émilion with a generous, fruit-driven core framed by fine, ripe tannins. The Merlot-led blend brings plush black and red berry fruit, while the supporting varieties contribute structure, tension and a gently savory edge. Expect a long, persistent finish marked by dark fruit, spice and a chalky, mineral imprint from the limestone soils. While already seductive in its youth, the wine has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully over 10–15+ years, gaining further complexity and harmony with time in the cellar.
Production
Château Fleur Cardinale’s vineyards lie on the eastern reaches of Saint-Émilion, on a mix of clay and limestone soils that naturally limit yields and promote deep root systems, giving wines with both power and freshness. The estate is planted primarily to Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and fruit is typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vessels to carefully manage extraction, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new) to integrate tannins and add complexity without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit and terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a superb match for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the aromatic profile to fully express itself; more mature bottles may need only a gentle splash decant to remove any sediment.
