Description

The 2022 Château Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classé is a landmark vintage from one of Saint-Émilion’s most revered estates, uniting classic Right Bank elegance with the depth and power of a warm, concentrated year. This is a wine made for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate both immediate seduction and serious aging potential. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé and famed for its unusually high proportion of Cabernet, Figeac stands apart on the plateau of Saint-Émilion as a true “Bordeaux original,” with a style that bridges Left Bank structure and Right Bank finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Figeac shows a deep, vivid garnet-purple core with an almost inky concentration at the center, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose opens with pure blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, layered with notes of violet, graphite, cedar shavings, and warm stone, alongside subtler tones of cocoa nib, tobacco leaf, and exotic spice. As it aerates, delicate floral and herbal nuances emerge, adding lift and complexity. On the palate, this is both vibrant and luxuriously textured, with a wonderful sense of energy despite the ripeness of the vintage. Expect finely woven tannins, polished yet firm, holding a core of dark berry fruit, cassis, and black cherry, accented by hints of pencil lead, crushed herbs, and savoury spice. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc bring freshness and linearity, while Merlot contributes mid-palate flesh and silk. The finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, suggesting significant capacity for development. While approachable after a few years in bottle, the 2022 Figeac is built to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Château Figeac’s 2022 is drawn from the estate’s exceptional gravelly terroir on the Saint-Émilion plateau, a rarity on the Right Bank and a key reason for its Left Bank–style profile. Deep gravel over sand and clay provides excellent drainage and encourages deep root penetration, fostering concentration and aromatic finesse even in warmer vintages. The grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, typically by hand, with rigorous sorting to retain only pristine fruit. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over excess power. The blend traditionally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside Merlot, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where the wine gains structure, complexity, and refinement before bottling.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Figeac is an outstanding partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or classic French fare like duck breast, tournedos Rossini, and truffled poultry. It also works beautifully with earthy elements—wild mushrooms, lentil dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is highly recommended to soften the tannins and allow the layers of fruit, spice, and minerality to emerge; mature bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to separate any sediment and awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Château Figeac is one of Saint-Émilion’s most historic and emblematic estates, with origins dating back many centuries and a modern reputation for crafting some of the appellation’s most distinctive and age-worthy wines. Elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status, Figeac stands out for its unique gravel terroir and its Cabernet-driven blend, which has long set it apart from its Merlot-dominant neighbors. Under thoughtful, quality-focused ownership and meticulous vineyard and cellar work, the château has become a benchmark for elegance, precision, and longevity in Right Bank Bordeaux. Consistently praised by critics and collectors alike, Château Figeac plays a central role in defining the prestige and character of Saint-Émilion on the world stage.
