Description
The 2022 Château Faugères Grand Cru Classé Saint-Émilion is a modern yet classically framed Right Bank Bordeaux, crafted to showcase the richness and finesse of its exceptional hillside vineyards. This is a Merlot-driven Saint-Émilion with real depth, polish and mineral tension, offering serious cellar potential without sacrificing immediate pleasure. As a Grand Cru Classé, Château Faugères stands among the appellation’s recognized elite, with a long-standing reputation enhanced in recent decades by major investment and a state-of-the-art winery.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Faugères shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue that hints at its intensity and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe black cherry, plum and cassis are lifted by notes of violets, graphite, licorice and a subtle touch of sweet spice and toasted oak. There is a distinct mineral edge, reflecting its limestone-rich soils, that adds precision to the wine’s generous fruit.
On the palate, this vintage is plush and velvety, with a core of dark berry fruit wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum are intertwined with cocoa, cedar, pencil lead and a savory, slightly saline finish. The 2022’s warm growing season has given the wine impressive ripeness and texture, balanced by fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish. While already seductive in its youth, it will benefit from several years of cellaring and should evolve gracefully for 10–20 years under good conditions.
Production
Château Faugères is located on the eastern side of the Saint-Émilion appellation, where vineyards lie on prized clay-limestone slopes and a limestone plateau that provide excellent drainage, natural freshness and deep root penetration. The estate practices meticulous vineyard work, with careful green harvesting, leaf-thinning and hand-picking at optimal ripeness to preserve both purity of fruit and terroir character. The blend is typically dominated by Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, all sorted berry by berry before fermentation. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to build structure without harshness, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to polish the tannins and add complexity while keeping the fruit and minerality at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a natural partner for classic French cuisine and robust, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast or grilled lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, and slow-braised short ribs, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, truffles, lentils or root vegetables. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère or mature cheddar also work very well. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; more mature bottles may require only gentle, brief decanting to remove sediment.
Producer
Château Faugères traces its roots back to the 19th century, but it has emerged in recent decades as one of the most dynamic estates in Saint-Émilion. Elevated to Grand Cru Classé status in the 2012 Classification of Saint-Émilion, the property has gained recognition for combining top-tier terroir with cutting-edge winemaking. Under the ownership of Silvio Denz and with input from renowned consultants, the château invested in a striking, gravity-flow winery designed by architect Mario Botta—now a landmark in the region. Today, Château Faugères is widely respected for producing wines that deliver both opulence and precision, helping to define the modern style of high-quality Right Bank Bordeaux.
