Description
The 2022 Château d'Yquem Y d'Yquem in magnum is the rare dry white from the legendary Sauternes estate, crafted from the same meticulously tended vineyards that produce the world’s most famous sweet wine. In this larger format, the wine’s precision, energy, and complexity are given even more room to evolve gracefully over time. Produced in tiny quantities and highly sought after by collectors and serious white Bordeaux lovers, this is a modern classic in the making.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Y d'Yquem shows a brilliant, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling both youth and vibrant freshness. The nose is highly expressive yet refined, with lifted aromas of white peach, ripe pear, lemon zest, and grapefruit, layered over notes of jasmine, fresh herbs, and a subtle smokiness from oak. With air, more complex nuances emerge: beeswax, crushed stones, and a hint of almond and pastry cream.
On the palate, this is a dry, concentrated, and intensely pure white Bordeaux, built on a core of Sauvignon Blanc tension supported by the texture and depth of Sémillon. You can expect a mouth‑coating, almost glycerol feel that remains linear and precise thanks to bright acidity. Flavors echo the nose—citrus, stone fruit, and fine floral tones—wrapped in discreet, high‑quality oak that adds spice and structure without dominating. The finish is long, saline, and mineral, with a lingering impression of citrus oil and delicate toast. In magnum, the wine has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully in its youth for its freshness and vibrancy, but should develop further complexity over 10–15+ years, gaining more honeyed, nutty, and truffled notes with time.
Production
Y d'Yquem is sourced entirely from the great vineyard of Château d’Yquem in Sauternes, a terroir of rolling hills with gravelly and sandy soils over clay and limestone, perfectly exposed to the morning mists and sunny afternoons that normally foster noble rot. For Y, however, selected parcels of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are harvested early, before botrytis develops, at perfect physiological ripeness to preserve freshness and tension. The fruit is picked by hand in small passes through the vineyard, just as for the estate’s sweet Sauternes, ensuring only pristine bunches are chosen. In the cellar, Y d’Yquem is vinified separately in its own dedicated fermentation room. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by aging “sur lie” to build texture and aromatic intensity. The wine then matures for around 10 months in French oak, about one‑third of which is new, before careful blending and bottling. Annual production is extremely limited, averaging around 10,000 bottles across all formats.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white wine that shines with refined, high‑quality cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as turbot, sole, or halibut in beurre blanc, lobster, scallops, or langoustines, as well as roasted chicken or guinea fowl with morels or light cream sauces. It also works superbly with fine vegetable dishes (asparagus, artichoke, spring vegetables, or truffle‑accented risottos) and delicately flavored cheeses like Comté, aged Gruyère, or young hard goat’s cheese. Serve well‑chilled, ideally at around 10–12°C (50–54°F); as it warms slightly in the glass, its full aromatic range will unfold. In magnum, decanting 30–45 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in the first few years after release, to let the wine open up and harmonize.
Producer
Château d’Yquem is one of the most revered names in the world of wine, long considered the benchmark for Sauternes and among the greatest sweet wines ever made. The estate’s history stretches back to the 16th century, and it was the only property to be classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, a testament to its singular status. Situated on some of the finest terroirs of Sauternes, Yquem has built its reputation on obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar, including multiple painstaking passes at harvest to select only the most exceptional berries. Y d’Yquem, first produced in 1959 and now made every year since 2004, represents the estate’s dry white expression—combining its historic savoir‑faire with a modern pursuit of freshness, precision, and gastronomic versatility. Highly rated by leading critics such as James Suckling and The Wine Independent, Y has secured its place as one of Bordeaux’s most important and collectible dry whites.
