Description

The 2022 Château d'Yquem Magnum is a majestic expression of Sauternes, capturing the estate’s signature combination of richness, freshness and detail in a generous 1.5L format. In this youthful vintage, Yquem balances opulent sweetness with remarkable precision, making it as compelling in its early years as it will be decades from now. Bottled in magnum, it is tailor-made for collectors, special occasions and long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château d'Yquem shows a luminous golden hue with bright, youthful reflections that will deepen with time. The nose is complex and layered, with notes of ripe apricot, candied citrus peel, white peach and acacia honey, intertwined with hints of saffron, vanilla bean, toasted brioche and a subtle floral lift typical of top Sauternes. As it opens, more exotic tones emerge—think pineapple, mango and fresh almond—underscored by a fine mineral thread. On the palate, this vintage is rich and velvety yet beautifully poised, offering an intense core of stone fruit, honeyed citrus and tropical nuances, wrapped in a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. The trademark botrytis character brings concentration and complexity, with accents of ginger, spice and caramelized fruit leading to a long, persistent finish. The 2022 has outstanding aging potential; in magnum, it can comfortably evolve and gain additional nuance over 30–50 years or more, rewarding patient cellaring with increasing depth and complexity.

Production
Château d'Yquem sits atop one of the most privileged terroirs in Sauternes, with a mosaic of gravel, sand and clay over a limestone subsoil that provides natural drainage and excellent ripening conditions. Morning mists rising from the nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers create the ideal environment for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), the key to Sauternes’ concentration and complexity. Harvesting at Yquem is carried out entirely by hand in multiple meticulous passes (tries) through the vineyard, with pickers selecting only perfectly botrytised berries—often resulting in extremely low yields. In the cellar, the must is slowly fermented, typically in new French oak barrels, with careful temperature control to preserve aromatics and achieve the ideal balance between sugar, alcohol and acidity. The wine then ages in oak, where it gains texture, aromatic complexity and the hallmark finesse that defines Château d'Yquem.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Château d'Yquem Magnum is a superb partner for rich and refined dishes such as foie gras, lobster with a saffron or citrus butter sauce, roasted poultry with truffle, or mature hard cheeses like Comté and aged Gouda. It also shines with blue cheeses (Roquefort, Stilton) and can create a luxurious pairing with fruit-based desserts—think tarte Tatin, poached pears or citrus tart—provided the dessert is not sweeter than the wine. Serve slightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F); as it warms in the glass, the aromatics and texture become more expansive. For young vintages like 2022, a short decant of 30–60 minutes in a broad-based decanter can help the wine open up, especially when served from magnum at a formal dinner or celebration.

Producer
Château d'Yquem is the undisputed reference point of Sauternes and one of the most revered sweet wine estates in the world. Documented as far back as the late 16th century, the estate achieved its legendary status when it was the only property classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, placing it above all other Sauternes and Barsac châteaux. Over the centuries, Yquem has become synonymous with meticulous vineyard work, extremely selective harvesting and uncompromising quality, producing wines that are renowned for their longevity, complexity and finesse. Its influence on the region is profound: Château d'Yquem is both a benchmark for sweet wine worldwide and a standard-bearer for the potential of Sauternes to produce wines of extraordinary elegance and depth.
