Description
2022 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Madame de Beaucaillou is a refined and approachable expression of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates. Crafted by the team behind the iconic Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien, this cuvée offers Ducru’s signature precision and elegance in a more immediately drinkable style. It’s a modern Médoc claret that brings top-tier pedigree within reach, without sacrificing depth or character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Madame de Beaucaillou shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple colour with bright, youthful reflections. The nose is generous and aromatic, opening with ripe blackcurrants, black cherries and plums, supported by notes of violet, graphite and a touch of cedar and spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a velvety, polished texture. Juicy dark berry fruit is framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that keeps everything in balance. Flavours of cassis, blackberry and redcurrant mingle with hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a subtle saline minerality, leading to a long, poised finish. While already appealing in its youth, this 2022 vintage has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, truffle and cigar box with time in bottle.
Production
Madame de Beaucaillou is sourced from meticulously selected parcels in the Médoc, where gravelly, well-drained soils over clay and limestone mirror the classic Left Bank terroir that has made Bordeaux famous. The gravel (“beaux cailloux”) helps reflect heat and ensures optimal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while cooler subsoils preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, often with a combination of machine and careful hand-selection, to ensure clean, ripe fruit. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit purity and varietal character, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new) to add texture, spice and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s vibrant fruit and elegance.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Madame de Beaucaillou is an ideal partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb, grilled ribeye steak, duck breast, or herb-crusted pork. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and finesse; if opened in its youth, a 45–60 minute decant will help the wine open up, softening the tannins and revealing its layered bouquet.
Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the great names of Bordeaux, a celebrated Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) of Saint-Julien, renowned for producing some of the most elegant and long-lived wines of the Left Bank. The estate takes its name from the ‘beautiful pebbles’ that define its gravel-rich terroir, and has been under the stewardship of the Borie family for decades, who have invested heavily in both the vineyards and the cellar. Madame de Beaucaillou represents the château’s vision of crafting a refined, accessibly styled Médoc wine that still carries the hallmark precision, polish and complexity associated with Ducru-Beaucaillou. Today, the estate is regarded as a benchmark for impeccably made, terroir-driven Bordeaux, consistently earning high critical praise and a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
