Description

Le Petit Ducru 2022 is the seductive, approachable sibling of the legendary Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, offering a refined taste of top-tier Saint-Julien at a more accessible level. Crafted with fruit from the same privileged terroir that shapes the grand vin, it delivers classic Left Bank structure wrapped in generous, modern fruit. This wine continues the château’s tradition of producing carefully judged second and third labels that are designed for earlier enjoyment, without sacrificing pedigree or precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Le Petit Ducru shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, layered with notes of violet, cedar shavings, graphite and a touch of spice—classic markers of fine Saint-Julien. Subtle hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and crushed stones add complexity as it aerates. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a polished, silk-textured attack, supported by finely grained tannins and fresh yet ripe acidity. Flavors of cassis, dark berries and black cherry are intertwined with savory elements of pencil lead, subtle toast and a whisper of vanilla from barrel aging. The finish is long for a wine in this category, clean and elegant, with lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. Enjoyable in its youth for its charm and generosity, the 2022 Le Petit Ducru also has the structure to evolve nicely over 8–12 years, gaining in nuance and softness with time in bottle.

Production
Le Petit Ducru is born from the gravel-rich terroirs of Saint-Julien in Bordeaux, where deep layers of large, well-draining pebbles (the famed “beaux cailloux”) over sand and clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vines are meticulously tended, with careful canopy management and green harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are hand-picked in small lots at peak maturity, then sorted rigorously before vinification. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannins. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a portion of which are new), where it gains aromatic complexity and textural finesse, while remaining more immediately approachable than the grand vin.

Food & Serving
Le Petit Ducru 2022 is an excellent partner for classic roasted or grilled red meats—think entrecôte, lamb chops, beef tenderloin or duck breast. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. For current drinking, decanting for 45–60 minutes helps the wine open up and smooth out its youthful structure; as it gains a few years of bottle age, a shorter decant will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, a famed Second Growth from the 1855 Classification, is one of the benchmarks of Saint-Julien and the Médoc. Named after the beautiful large stones that dominate its vineyards, the estate has long been celebrated for producing wines of precision, depth and remarkable longevity. Under the stewardship of the Borie family, Ducru-Beaucaillou has invested heavily in vineyard management and cellar technology, refining a range that now includes Le Petit Ducru as a more accessible expression of its exceptional terroir. The château’s consistent critical acclaim and its status as a reference-point estate in Bordeaux make even its second and third wines highly sought-after by collectors and savvy drinkers alike.
