Description
The 2022 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is a benchmark white Rhône, crafted by one of the region’s most revered estates. Focused on expressive Roussanne and traditional southern Rhône white varieties, it delivers both immediate pleasure and impressive aging potential. This cuvée stands out for its depth, texture, and elegance, representing the white-wine side of a château best known for its legendary reds. Defined by its old-vine Roussanne, organic farming and iconic “galets roulés” (rounded river stones), Beaucastel Blanc is richer and more complex than most southern French whites. Château de Beaucastel has been a reference point in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for over a century, pioneering both organic viticulture and the preservation of all 13 permitted grape varieties, including the region’s finest parcels of Roussanne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is a luminous pale gold with green highlights, deepening slightly as it aerates. The nose is immediately refined and expressive, offering layers of white flowers (acacia, jasmine), ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot, fresh pear, and citrus zest, underpinned by hints of honey, almond, and a subtle saline-mineral note.
On the palate, this is a generous yet beautifully poised white, medium to full-bodied with a silky, almost glycerol texture typical of high-quality Roussanne. Flavors of ripe nectarine, yellow plum, and pear mingle with lemon oil, fennel, and a gentle spiciness, all wrapped in a finely etched mineral frame. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, giving lift and definition to the wine’s natural richness, while a long, mouth-coating finish leaves impressions of citrus, honeycomb, and wet stone. While it is accessible and seductive in its youth, the 2022 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 5–10 years in the cellar, developing more honeyed, nutty, and truffled notes with time.
Production
The fruit for Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc comes from estate vineyards in the northern sector of the appellation, where the classic Rhône terroir of galets roulés (large rounded stones), sand, and clay provides excellent drainage and heat retention. The mistral wind helps keep the vines healthy and concentrates aromas, while the combination of warm days and cooler nights preserves freshness in the grapes. The blend is dominated by Roussanne, supported by traditional Rhône white varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, all farmed organically and largely by hand. Harvest takes place parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness to retain both aromatics and natural acidity. Vinification typically involves gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation, and a judicious use of oak for part of the Roussanne component—often in large barrels or demi-muids—to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s purity. Aging on fine lees adds further depth, creaminess, and aromatic nuance before blending and bottling at the estate.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Beaucastel Blanc is a versatile gastronomic white that shines with refined, flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, crab, or roasted monkfish, as well as grilled or poached white fish in beurre blanc or citrus-butter sauces. It also works superbly with roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, truffled dishes, risotto, and semi-soft cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or aged goat’s cheese. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both freshness and texture; avoid over-chilling, which can mute its complexity. For young bottles, a brief decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended to allow the aromatics to fully open, especially if served with more elaborate dishes.
Producer
Château de Beaucastel is one of the most storied and respected estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots dating back to the 16th century and a modern history shaped by the Perrin family since the early 1900s. The domaine is renowned for cultivating all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation and for its early adoption of organic (and later biodynamic-inspired) farming, long before such practices became widespread. Located in Courthézon, in the north of the appellation, Beaucastel’s vineyards are famed for their thick layer of river stones over clay and sand, a defining element of the estate’s style. Beaucastel has consistently been recognized by critics and wine lovers worldwide as a reference point for both red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with its Roussanne-based whites in particular considered among the greatest and most ageworthy white wines of the Rhône Valley.
