Description
The 2022 Château d'Armailhac Pauillac is a poised and polished expression of Left Bank Bordeaux, offering serious pedigree at a more accessible level than its famous neighbors. Owned by the Rothschild family of Château Mouton Rothschild, this Fifth Growth estate consistently overdelivers in charm, structure, and longevity. The warm 2022 vintage has produced a wine that is both generously fruited and classically Pauillac in its cassis-driven profile and fine, graphite-tinged tannins.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château d'Armailhac shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple color, hinting at its youthful concentration and intensity. The nose is lifted and expressive, with layers of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and dark cherry intertwined with notes of cedar, pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, crushed violets, and a touch of cocoa and spice from well-judged oak.
On the palate, this Pauillac is medium to full-bodied with a sleek, modern texture. Ripe black fruits are framed by finely grained tannins and a fresh, well-defined acidity that keeps the wine precise and energetic. Flavors of cassis, black plum, and mulberry are joined by hints of graphite, espresso, and savory herbs, building toward a persistent, slightly smoky finish. While already appealing in its youth for those who enjoy vibrant fruit and structure, the 2022 has solid aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and cigar box.
Production
Château d'Armailhac sits on classic Pauillac terroir, with deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that provide excellent drainage and naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor in the grapes. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, reflecting the estate’s historic plantings. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel to capture optimal ripeness across the varied plots. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing a precise, plot-by-plot approach to extraction. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a portion new each year), where it gains additional structure, aromatic complexity, and polish before bottling.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Château d'Armailhac pairs naturally with classic dishes from the French repertoire and beyond: think roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye steaks, venison, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also works beautifully with hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-matured Cheddar, and with earthy mushroom-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open; as the wine ages and integrates, a shorter decant or simply opening in advance will usually suffice.
Producer
Château d'Armailhac is one of Pauillac’s historic estates, classified as a Fifth Growth in the original 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in the late 20th century, the property has seen substantial investment and renewed focus, raising its quality and reputation while maintaining a strong sense of identity. Nestled close to Mouton Rothschild and Pontet-Canet, its vineyards share some of the appellation’s finest gravelly terroirs, and the estate has become known for producing wines that combine the structure and seriousness of Pauillac with a supple, approachable style. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, Château d'Armailhac has solidified its position as one of the most reliable and exciting value propositions among classified growths in Bordeaux.
