Description

The 2022 Château Clos de Sarpe Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a powerful, structured Right Bank Bordeaux that captures the richness of this warm, highly praised vintage. Crafted from old vines rooted in the limestone plateau above Saint-Émilion, it delivers both concentration and lift, balancing opulent fruit with a striking mineral backbone. Long regarded as a connoisseur’s address in Saint-Émilion, Clos de Sarpe continues its tradition of low-yield, artisanal winemaking with this deeply expressive release.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos de Sarpe shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose opens with ripe black cherry and blackberry compote, followed by darker notes of plum, cassis and graphite. With air, more complex layers emerge: violet, crushed stone, cocoa nibs, licorice and a touch of sweet spice from well-integrated oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied, dense and layered, yet lifted by the classic limestone freshness of the estate. Juicy black and red fruits are framed by firm, finely grained tannins and a vibrant acid line that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry and damson are intertwined with notes of tobacco leaf, espresso, cedar and saline minerality. The finish is long, persistent and mouthcoating, suggesting very strong aging potential. While it can be approached after several years in bottle, this 2022 is built to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining further complexity and polish with time.

Production
Château Clos de Sarpe sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s prized limestone and clay plateaus, where old Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines sink deep roots into thin, stony soils. The blend typically favors Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc (and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon), which together give both plush fruit and structure. Yields are deliberately kept very low, often among the lowest in the appellation, with meticulous, largely manual work in the vineyard and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, grapes are carefully sorted and fermented in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve purity and detail. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, beef short ribs, duck breast, or game birds. It also works well alongside truffle dishes, mushroom ragouts, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or Saint-Nectaire. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfold. Older bottles will benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant simply to separate the wine from any sediment.

Producer
Château Clos de Sarpe is a historic, family-run estate in Saint-Émilion, with roots going back several generations on the appellation’s famed limestone plateau. Long considered something of an insider’s château, Clos de Sarpe has built a reputation for intensely concentrated, ageworthy wines that speak clearly of their terroir. The estate has increasingly focused on precision viticulture, low yields and attentive, small-batch winemaking, positioning it among the more characterful and distinctive properties of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Its wines are regularly noted by critics for their depth, structure and ability to evolve gracefully over decades.
