Description
The 2022 Château Clerc Milon Grand Cru Classé Pauillac is a polished and characterful red Bordeaux from one of Pauillac’s most exciting, upward‑rising estates. Born in a warm, concentrated vintage, this wine combines the classic structure of Cabernet‑driven Left Bank blends with an accessible, modern sense of fruit and finesse. As a classified growth under the same family ownership as Château Mouton Rothschild, Clerc Milon offers a compelling entry into top‑tier Pauillac at a comparatively approachable level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clerc Milon shows a deep, opaque ruby to purple hue, with a vivid rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered: blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and dark cherry are wrapped in notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle spice, with a touch of cocoa and dried violets emerging as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is a full‑bodied yet finely structured Pauillac, with firm, ripe tannins and a core of dark fruit that remains fresh and poised. Cassis, plum and black cherry are interwoven with savory tones of pencil shavings, cigar box, roasting coffee and a hint of dried herbs. The finish is long, precise and mouth‑coating, with vibrant acidity and a mineral backbone that promises excellent evolution. While already impressive in its youth, the 2022 has clear aging potential and should develop complexity and tertiary nuances over 15–25 years in a good cellar.
Production
Château Clerc Milon lies in the heart of Pauillac on classic deep gravel and clay‑gravel soils overlooking the Gironde, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions. The estate vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and the tempering influence of the nearby river, helping the grapes achieve full ripeness with balanced acidity even in a warm vintage like 2022. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the healthiest, most perfectly ripe berries are retained. Vinification typically takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color, flavor and tannin, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to integrate structure and add subtle notes of spice and toast without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Pauillac’s depth and structure make it a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, dry‑aged ribeye, venison, or slow‑braised beef cheeks. It also matches beautifully with truffle‑infused dishes, mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfold; as it matures, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Clerc Milon is a historic Pauillac estate, classified as a Cinquième Cru (Fifth Growth) in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc. Its modern renaissance began under the ownership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family, who also oversee neighboring icons Château Mouton Rothschild and Château d’Armailhac. Located between Mouton and Lafite on some of Pauillac’s finest gravel terraces, Clerc Milon has gained a reputation for delivering wines of increasing precision, depth and elegance, often punching above their formal classification. Investments in vineyard management and cellar technology over recent decades have elevated the estate’s status, making it a reference point for collectors seeking serious Pauillac that combines pedigree, reliability and relative value.
