Description

The 2022 Château Berliquet Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a refined, limestone-driven right bank Bordeaux that captures the generosity of the 2022 vintage while staying true to the estate’s elegant, terroir-focused style. Perched on the coveted limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, Berliquet produces wines that combine vibrant freshness with deep, silky fruit. This Grand Cru Classé stands out for its precision, mineral backbone, and polished tannins, making it a compelling choice for both collectors and lovers of classic Saint-Émilion. What sets Château Berliquet apart is its seamless blend of ripe Merlot and structured Cabernet Franc grown on a mosaic of limestone, clay, and slope vineyards, bringing together richness and lift in equal measure. With a history dating back to the 18th century and a recent renaissance under new ownership and investment, Berliquet has rapidly ascended into the top tier of modern Saint-Émilion estates while retaining a strong sense of heritage and place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Château Berliquet shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet core with purple highlights at the rim, signaling both youth and intensity. The nose opens with pure, ripe red and black fruits—think black cherry, plum, and wild blackberry—layered with notes of violets, crushed stone, graphite, and a subtle hint of sweet spice and cocoa from carefully judged oak. As it aerates, more complex nuances emerge: a touch of dried herbs, cedar, and a cool, limestone-induced minerality that threads through the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a velvety, finely woven texture. Ripe, succulent Merlot delivers plush fruit and mid-palate volume, while Cabernet Franc adds tension, florals, and a refined, almost saline finish. Expect flavors of dark cherry, ripe plum, and blackcurrant framed by hints of licorice, tobacco leaf, and subtle baking spice. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, keeping the wine lively despite its density, and the tannins are polished yet firm, promising excellent aging potential. Enjoyable in its youth after a good decant, the 2022 Berliquet should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, developing greater complexity, tertiary notes, and even silkier texture.

Production
Château Berliquet’s 2022 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is crafted from vineyards ideally situated on the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau and its gently sloping côtes, a terroir renowned for imparting both aromatic lift and a distinctive mineral edge. The soils are predominantly limestone with clay and some marl, providing excellent drainage and natural water regulation—an advantage in warmer vintages like 2022. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, allowing the team to pick at optimal ripeness and maintain strict selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables. In the cellar, vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats with careful extraction to preserve finesse rather than power, often complemented by a significant proportion of whole berries to enhance aromatics and texture. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a portion new, with the balance in second- and third-fill wood) for added complexity and structure, while ensuring the oak remains a supporting frame rather than the main feature.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Château Berliquet is an excellent partner for refined yet flavorful dishes that highlight its balance of richness and freshness. Classic pairings include roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with truffle jus, as well as game birds and dishes featuring mushrooms or lentils that echo the wine’s earthy-mineral nuances. It also pairs gracefully with hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or a well-matured Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show the wine’s aromatic detail and textural finesse. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet, while more mature bottles will generally need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to separate any sediment.

Producer
Château Berliquet is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic estates, with roots that trace back to the 18th century and a long-standing reputation for producing wines deeply expressive of the limestone plateau. In recent years, the property has undergone a remarkable transformation under new stewardship and investment, aligning it with some of the most quality-focused estates on the right bank. Surrounded by prestigious neighbors on the plateau, Berliquet has leveraged its exceptional terroir and modernized its vineyard and cellar practices to elevate precision, purity, and elegance in its wines. The château is now widely recognized as an increasingly important reference point in Saint-Émilion, consistently attracting critical praise for its nuanced, ageworthy Grand Cru Classé bottlings.
