Description

The 2022 Bouchard Père & Fils Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most revered vineyards on earth. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay grown in the legendary Montrachet climat, this wine captures the rare combination of power, precision, and profound complexity that has made the site famous. In the youthful and concentrated 2022 vintage, it offers both immediate seduction and remarkable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru shows a luminous, pale gold color with green highlights that hint at its youth and energy. The nose is intensely layered yet refined, opening with notes of ripe white peach, lemon curd, and Williams pear, followed by orange blossom, acacia, and delicate hints of toasted hazelnut. With air, deeper aromas emerge: buttered brioche, crushed oyster shell, flint, and subtle vanilla-spice from its fine-grained oak. On the palate, this is opulent yet incredibly precise, with a broad, mouth-filling texture supported by a vibrant, chalk-tinged acidity. Flavors of orchard fruit, citrus oil, and yellow plum are interwoven with nuances of almond cream, fresh butter, and wet stone. The finish is very long, saline, and tightly coiled, suggesting years of development ahead. While already impressive in its youth, this Grand Cru is built to age gracefully for 12–20 years from the vintage, gaining complexity, depth, and truffle-tinged nuances over time.

Production
Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most hallowed Grand Cru vineyards, straddling the border between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet on well-drained, east- to southeast-facing slopes. The soils are a mix of limestone and marl with excellent drainage, providing both power and minerality to the Chardonnay. Bouchard Père & Fils harvests the fruit by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and cellar to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Fermentation takes place primarily in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, followed by extended aging on the fine lees to build texture, aromatic complexity, and depth, while preserving the purity and precision of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Montrachet Grand Cru is best reserved for refined dishes where its nuance and power can truly shine. Ideal pairings include butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a light cream sauce; it also excels alongside rich foie gras terrines and delicate truffled dishes. Serve cool but not cold, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromas to fully express themselves. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth can help open the bouquet and soften the structure; older bottles (10+ years) should be handled gently and decanted briefly only if sediment is present.

Producer
Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest and most respected houses, with a deep historic presence in the Côte d’Or. Over centuries, the family built an exceptional mosaic of vineyards, including some of the region’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Crus. Today, Bouchard is recognized as a benchmark producer, especially in the Côte de Beaune, where its holdings and long experience allow it to interpret top terroirs like Montrachet with authority and finesse. Their meticulous vineyard work, combined with a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach in the cellar, has earned them a reputation for producing wines of elegance, longevity, and remarkable typicity.
