Description

The 2022 Bodegas El Nido Nido Jeroboam (3 liter) is a powerful, opulent red wine from Jumilla that captures the sun-drenched intensity of southeastern Spain in a grand, celebratory format. Crafted in limited quantities, this 3L bottling is designed for special occasions, showcasing the depth, richness, and polish that have made El Nido one of the most sought-after wines from the region. Combining Mediterranean warmth with meticulous winemaking, it offers a modern, luxurious expression of Spanish red wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Nido shows an opaque, near-black core with a deep ruby-purple rim, signaling impressive concentration and youthful energy. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered, with ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, and blueberry compote interwoven with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, licorice, sweet spices, and a touch of toasted oak. Subtle hints of dried herbs and graphite add complexity beneath the lush fruit. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured wine with a velvety mouthfeel and abundant yet finely structured tannins. Expect a dense core of black fruit—cassis, black plum, and black cherry—supported by cocoa, vanilla, and a savory, mineral-tinged backbone that reflects its Jumilla origins. The finish is long, persistent, and warming, with fresh acidity keeping the wine from feeling heavy. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential; properly cellared, this 2022 vintage in Jeroboam format can evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining further nuance and integration over time.

Production
Bodegas El Nido is located in Jumilla, in Spain’s sun-baked southeast, where old-vine Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive in poor, stony, limestone-rich soils at relatively high altitudes. The region’s intense sunlight, low rainfall, and large diurnal temperature swings contribute to low yields and grapes of exceptional concentration and phenolic ripeness. Grapes for Nido are typically sourced from older vineyards, harvested by hand at optimal maturity to ensure meticulous selection. In the cellar, the wine is made with a modern, quality-focused approach: careful sorting, temperature-controlled fermentation, and extended maceration to extract color, flavor, and structure, followed by aging in high-quality French (and sometimes a portion of American) oak barrels. The large 3L Jeroboam is bottled with long-term aging in mind, offering a slower evolution and heightened complexity over time.

Food & Serving
The 2022 El Nido Nido Jeroboam is a natural partner for rich, deeply flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats—think ribeye steak, lamb chops, Iberian pork, or slow-braised beef short ribs—as well as game such as venison or wild boar. Mature hard cheeses, truffle-infused dishes, and hearty stews also complement its intensity and structure. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if the wine is very young or recently opened, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften. Given the large format, opening it for a gathering or festive meal allows the wine to slowly evolve in the glass over the course of the evening.

Producer
Bodegas El Nido, established in the early 2000s in Jumilla, quickly gained an international reputation for producing some of Spain’s most powerful and polished red wines. The project is part of the Gil Family group and has benefited from the expertise of renowned winemakers, blending local know-how with a modern, globally minded approach. By focusing on old-vine Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon, extremely low yields, and meticulous barrel work, El Nido has helped redefine what is possible in Jumilla, elevating the region from an insider’s secret to a serious contender on the world stage. The flagship wines from Bodegas El Nido regularly receive high critical acclaim and have become benchmarks for concentrated, ageworthy Mediterranean reds.
