Description
The 2022 Bernhard Ott Grüner Veltliner Ried Stein Kamptal 1ÖWT BIO is a precise, mineral-driven expression of Austria’s flagship white grape from a top single vineyard site. Crafted from organically farmed vines and classified as 1ÖWT (Erste Lage) by the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter, it captures the tension between ripe fruit and stony elegance that defines serious Kamptal Grüner. This is a deeply authentic, terroir-focused wine from one of Austria’s most respected white wine specialists.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grüner Veltliner shows a pale straw to light lemon color with a subtle green hue, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is finely etched rather than exuberant: white pepper and crushed rock mingle with notes of green pear, lime zest, Granny Smith apple, fresh herbs and a delicate floral lift—think meadow flowers and a touch of fennel.
On the palate, the wine is precise, dry and incisive, with a firm mineral backbone. Flavors of crisp pear, citrus, green plum and gooseberry unfold over a core of wet stone and subtle savoury spice, a hallmark of serious Grüner Veltliner. The texture is both linear and quietly creamy, balanced by vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, salty-mineral and peppery, suggesting this is more than just a casual aperitif wine. While already enjoyable in its youth for its purity and vibrancy, it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining complexity, a touch of smokiness and more nutty, honeyed nuances with bottle age.
Production
Ried Stein is a stony, well-exposed vineyard in Kamptal, shaped by poor, rocky soils of primary rock and gravel with good drainage, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor in the grapes. The cool nights and warm days of Kamptal’s continental climate allow Grüner Veltliner to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic detail. Bernhard Ott farms this site organically (BIO), with painstaking attention to canopy management and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to ensure clean, healthy fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation typically takes place with ambient or carefully selected yeasts in stainless steel and/or large neutral casks, allowing the terroir to shine without overt oak influence. Extended lees contact adds texture and depth, while the wine is handled with minimal intervention to preserve its purity and mineral clarity.
Food & Serving
This Kamptal Grüner Veltliner is a versatile food wine, shining alongside everything from simple seafood to refined, aromatic cuisine. Pair it with freshwater fish, grilled prawns, sushi and sashimi, or classic Austrian dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, fried chicken and light veal preparations. Its peppery, herbal edge also makes it excellent with asparagus, artichokes, spring vegetables, light salads, goat cheese, soft cheeses and subtly spiced Asian dishes (think Vietnamese, Japanese or lightly spiced Thai). Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to open. A brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the wine unfold its layers, especially in the first few years after release.
