Description

The 2022 Álvaro Palacios Remondo Quiñón de Valmira is one of Rioja’s most singular expressions of Garnacha, crafted from a historic single vineyard in Rioja Oriental. Ethereal in color yet deeply complex in character, it blurs the line between fine red and serious rosado, offering a wine of precision, perfume, and striking finesse. Produced in tiny quantities, it represents the pinnacle of the Palacios Remondo estate and a modern, terroir-driven vision of Rioja.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Quiñón de Valmira shows a very pale, luminous ruby to onion-skin pink hue, almost like a fine Provence rosé yet with the clarity and depth of a delicate red. The nose is wonderfully lifted and aromatic, with wild strawberry, pomegranate, blood orange, and white cherry layered over rose petals, thyme, and hints of wet stone and subtle spice. On the palate, it is ultra-refined and textured rather than powerful, with a silk-like mouthfeel and an almost weightless sense of grace. Red berry fruit—fraises des bois, cranberry, and redcurrant—is wrapped in citrus zest, saline minerality, and a gentle herbal nuance, all carried by crisp, mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are very fine and barely perceptible, giving structure without grip, and the finish is long, pure, and delicately savory. While it is captivating in its youth for its brightness and perfume, it should evolve beautifully over the next 6–8 years, gaining complexity and a more layered, saline depth with a few years in bottle.

Production
Quiñón de Valmira comes from a high-altitude, single vineyard on the slopes of Monte Yerga in Rioja Oriental, where old-vine Garnacha is rooted in poor, stony, calcareous and ferrous-clay soils. The site’s elevation, significant diurnal temperature shifts, and constant breezes preserve acidity and aromatic complexity, giving a fresher, more Atlantic-leaning profile than one might expect from this warmer corner of Rioja. The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine bunches are used. Vinification is gentle and detail-focused: whole or partially destemmed clusters are fermented with indigenous yeasts at carefully controlled temperatures, with minimal extraction to preserve delicacy and finesse. The wine is then aged in large neutral oak vessels and/or concrete, emphasizing texture and transparency over overt oak influence, before being bottled with minimal intervention to faithfully transmit the character of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This wine’s elegance and freshness make it remarkably versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as grilled or roasted turbot, monkfish, or sea bass, as well as tuna tartare, salmon crudo, and delicately spiced Mediterranean seafood. It is equally at home with roast chicken, quail, Iberian pork, or vegetable-driven cuisine like grilled seasonal vegetables, mushroom dishes, or saffron-infused rice and paella. Serve slightly chilled, around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to highlight its aromatic lift and tension. Decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its first few years, allowing the floral and mineral notes to fully emerge.

Producer
Álvaro Palacios is one of Spain’s most influential and respected winemakers, renowned for redefining the potential of iconic regions such as Priorat, Bierzo, and Rioja. At the family estate of Palacios Remondo in Rioja Oriental, he has shifted the focus toward Garnacha and high-altitude, terroir-expressive wines that emphasize finesse over heaviness. Quiñón de Valmira is the crown jewel of the estate—a single-vineyard bottling that encapsulates his philosophy of precision, elegance, and sense of place. Through meticulous viticulture and thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking, Álvaro Palacios has helped reposition Rioja Oriental from a source of simple, warm reds to a region capable of producing some of Spain’s most distinctive and sought-after fine wines.
