Description
Álvaro Palacios Finca Dofí is widely regarded as one of Spain’s benchmark reds, often listed among the country’s very top wines. Sourced from steep, low-yielding vineyards rooted in Priorat’s iconic llicorella (red slate) soils, it marries Mediterranean richness with striking freshness and finesse. In this vintage, Finca Dofí shows an especially refined, almost Barolo-like elegance, underlined by critical acclaim including 95 points from Robert Parker and 94 points from James Suckling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Finca Dofí is deeply colored—almost opaque ruby with a dark core and a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is pure and lifted, opening with red cherry and wild strawberry, followed by blood orange, ripe peach skin, and hints of fresh herbs and anise. Subtle floral notes, warm stones, and a touch of spice add complexity as it breathes.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and poised: concentrated red and black fruit are wrapped in a silk-smooth, velvety texture. Ripe tannins are present but finely woven, giving structure without harshness. There is a beautiful interplay of sweetness of fruit, savory earth, and a gentle, almost saline mineral line from the slate soils. The finish is long, elegant and balanced, with lingering notes of red fruit, citrus peel, and subtle herbal spice. Well-made Finca Dofí is built to age; this vintage should evolve gracefully for 12–18 years from release, gaining even more complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
Finca Dofí is drawn primarily from old-vine Garnacha planted on the steep, terraced slopes of Priorat, where vineyards sit between roughly 100 and 700 meters above sea level on the flanks of the Serra del Montsant. The soils are the classic llicorella—poor, stony, volcanic in origin, dominated by red slate and quartz—which forces the vines to send roots deep in search of water and nutrients, naturally limiting yields to around 15 hl/ha and concentrating flavor. Harvest is carried out by hand on the difficult, rocky slopes, with strict selection in the vineyard and winery. The wine is vinified with great care to preserve purity of fruit and a sense of place, typically fermenting in temperature-controlled vats before aging in high-quality French oak (a mix of large foudres and barrels) to refine tannins and add subtle complexity without overwhelming the character of the vineyard.
Food & Serving
Finca Dofí’s combination of depth and freshness makes it a versatile partner at the table. It shines with roasted or grilled lamb, Iberico pork, game birds, or slow-braised beef, and works beautifully alongside dishes with Mediterranean herbs, root vegetables, and earthy components like mushrooms or truffles. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses and rich, herb-scented stews. Serve at 16–18 °C; decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold, or simply give it a generous pour in large-bowled glasses if drinking at peak maturity.
Producer
Álvaro Palacios is one of the most influential winemakers in modern Spanish wine, a key figure in the renaissance of Priorat. After formative experience at Château Pétrus in Bordeaux, he returned to Catalonia in the late 1980s and helped transform Priorat from an almost-forgotten region into one of Spain’s most prestigious appellations. From steep, ancient vineyards surrounding the historic village of Gratallops, he crafts a focused range of terroir-driven wines, with Finca Dofí standing as one of his flagship single-vineyard bottlings. Palacios’ work has been widely recognized by critics and collectors worldwide, and his wines play a defining role in how the Priorat region is perceived on the global fine wine stage.
