2022 Alion

2022 Alión is one of Ribera del Duero’s most admired modern reds, combining depth, polish, and a distinctly contemporary style. Made by the Vega Sicilia family, it has earned a strong reputation for delivering serious quality and precision while remaining more approachable in youth than many of the region’s biggest wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby to dark garnet color. The nose is expressive and refined, with ripe black fruit, blackberry, plum, and dark cherry layered with violets, cocoa, spice, and subtle toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet elegant, with firm but polished tannins and excellent freshness. Flavors of dark berries, licorice, graphite, and spice unfold with length and balance, suggesting strong aging potential over the next 8–15 years, and likely beyond in a good cellar.

Production
Alión comes from Castilla y León, within the prestigious Ribera del Duero area, where altitude, warm days, and cool nights help preserve freshness while building concentration. The wine is typically produced from carefully selected old-vine Tempranillo sourced from exceptional sites, with hand harvesting and rigorous sorting to ensure only top-quality fruit is used. Vinification is focused on precision and balance, followed by aging in oak to add structure, texture, and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for grilled ribeye, lamb chops, roast beef, slow-braised short ribs, or game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged Manchego and other firm, savory cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
