Description
2022 Aiurri Landua is a characterful red wine from the high-altitude vineyards of Rioja Alavesa, crafted in small quantities by the boutique producer Aiurri. This cuvée showcases the tension between freshness and depth that has made this sub-region one of Spain’s most exciting sources of modern Rioja. Marrying traditional know‑how with a precise, low‑intervention approach, it offers a vivid snapshot of its Atlantic‑influenced terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2022 Aiurri Landua presents a bright, medium-deep ruby color with youthful violet highlights at the rim, signaling its energy and vibrancy. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and red plum layered over hints of dried herbs, cracked pepper, and subtle spice. Underneath, there’s a gentle mineral edge and a whisper of dried flowers that speak to its origin in limestone-rich soils.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely structured, combining juicy red fruit with a refreshing line of acidity and polished, chalky tannins. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, and red currant mingle with savory tones of fresh thyme, tobacco leaf, and a touch of cocoa or sweet spice from oak aging (if used). The finish is long, clean, and delicately saline, making it both seriously drinkable and food-friendly. Enjoyable now for its purity and brightness, it should evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining in complexity and softness while retaining its core freshness.
Production
Aiurri Landua is sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, a cooler, higher-altitude corner of Rioja known for its limestone and clay soils and strong Atlantic influence. These conditions deliver naturally lower yields, thicker skins, and grapes with excellent balance between ripeness and acidity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe bunches are brought to the cellar. In the winery, the focus is on gentle handling: the grapes are destemmed (or partly whole-cluster, depending on the vintage), followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation in small tanks to preserve aromatic clarity and terroir expression. Aging takes place in a mix of neutral and lightly-toasted barrels or larger wooden vessels, designed to add texture and integration without masking the vibrant fruit and mineral character of Rioja Alavesa.
Food & Serving
2022 Aiurri Landua is a versatile food partner that shines with Mediterranean and modern bistro cuisine. Think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, Iberico pork, roast chicken, chorizo-based dishes, or earthy vegetable plates like roasted peppers, mushrooms, and eggplant. It also pairs beautifully with semi-cured cheeses such as Manchego or Idiazabal. Serve at 15–17°C (slightly cooler than room temperature) to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes will help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the red-fruit and floral notes to fully unfold.
Producer
Aiurri is a quality-driven, small-scale producer in Rioja Alavesa, a sub-region revered for its old vines, limestone soils, and fine, age-worthy reds with distinct freshness. While not among the largest or oldest bodegas in Rioja, Aiurri has quickly earned attention for its terroir-focused, artisanal approach and commitment to showcasing the unique character of its high-altitude parcels. Working closely with local growers and favoring careful vineyard work over heavy-handed winemaking, Aiurri crafts wines like Landua that reflect a more contemporary vision of Rioja: elegant, precise, and deeply rooted in place while still honoring the region’s long tradition of fine red wine.
