Description

2021 Wine & Soul Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas is a profound Douro red crafted from more than 30 indigenous Portuguese grape varieties, all sourced from a single centenarian vineyard. This is a seriously old-vine field blend that distills the essence of the Douro’s schist terraces into one concentrated yet beautifully poised wine. With a 95-point score from Robert Parker, it stands out as one of the region’s benchmark expressions of depth, elegance and terroir. What makes this wine truly unique is its heritage: over 100-year-old, south-facing vines at Quinta da Manoella, delivering naturally low yields and remarkable complexity. Traditional foot-treading in lagares, followed by 20 months of aging in French oak, frames a wine that marries power with finesse. Since inheriting Quinta da Manoella in 2009, Wine & Soul has turned this historic estate into one of the Douro’s most exciting sources of old-vine reds, continuing a story that links the valley’s past to its modern, quality-driven present.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas is deep, opaque ruby with a youthful purple rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately complex and layered, offering intense aromas of blackcurrant (cassis), ripe plum and blackberry, supported by notes of dark chocolate, graphite-like minerality and a subtle, savory spice from the oak. As it opens, delicate hints of dried herbs and violets emerge, adding further nuance. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet polished, with ripe, fine-grained tannins that cloak the abundant dark fruit. Flavors of plum, cassis and blackberry are intertwined with dark chocolate, a stony mineral edge and gentle spice, creating a harmonious and long, graceful finish. The structure is firm but not austere, balancing richness with freshness and precision. While already seductive in its youth, this old-vine Douro red has excellent aging potential; with proper cellaring, it should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining even greater complexity and tertiary notes of leather, tobacco and truffle.

Production
Quinta da Manoella lies in the heart of the Douro, with steep, south-facing terraces planted on poor, schistous soils that naturally restrain vigor and concentrate flavor. The Vinhas Velhas parcel is over 100 years old and is a traditional field blend of around 30 native Douro varieties, all co-planted and co-harvested. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness and undergo a rigorous selection before being fully destemmed. They are then traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares, a gentle yet thorough extraction method that draws out deep color and flavor while limiting harsh seed tannins. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity and definition, followed by around 20 months of maturation in French oak barrels—approximately 30% new and 70% used—adding structure, spice and refinement without overpowering the wine’s distinctive terroir character.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted red meats, slow-braised beef or lamb, game such as venison or wild boar, and hearty stews with robust, savory sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged, hard cheeses like Manchego, Comté or mature Portuguese varieties. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its freshness and complexity. For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to fully unfold and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Wine & Soul was founded in 2001 by the highly respected duo Sandra Tavares da Silva and Jorge Borges, both deeply rooted in the Douro and already renowned for their work at top estates such as Quinta do Vale D. Maria, Quinta de Chocapalha, Niepoort and now Passadouro. From the outset, their vision was clear: to craft soulful, terroir-driven wines that capture the Douro’s individuality through old vines and meticulous, hands-on winemaking. They began with a small, ancient vineyard in Vale de Mendiz, near the famed Quinta do Noval, and quickly rose to prominence as one of the region’s leading boutique producers. In 2009 they inherited Quinta da Manoella, an extraordinary property dominated by very old, south-facing vineyards, which has since become the crown jewel of their portfolio. Today, Wine & Soul is widely regarded as a reference point in the Douro, consistently earning high international acclaim for wines that combine authenticity, elegance and remarkable aging capacity.
