Description

The 2021 Weingut Schloss Lieser Riesling Juffer Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs is a benchmark dry Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s most coveted grand cru vineyards. This is precision winemaking in its purest form: stony, wiry and elegant, yet with the power and depth worthy of Germany’s highest classification for dry wines. Produced in very limited quantities, it captures the cool, classic character of the 2021 vintage with striking clarity and finesse. As a Grosses Gewächs from the famous Juffer Sonnenuhr site, this wine stands out for its combination of razor‑sharp minerality, vibrant acidity and silken texture. The 2021 vintage, with its cool growing season and long, sunny September, delivered exceptionally healthy grapes with intense aromatics and refined structure. Schloss Lieser has become a reference estate in the Mosel, and this GG underlines why their dry Rieslings are now among the most sought‑after in Germany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Juffer Sonnenuhr GG shows a pale lemon color with green highlights, reflecting its youth and freshness. The nose is taut and precise, opening with flinty, smoky notes reminiscent of struck stone and wet slate. As it unfolds, you’ll find layers of lemon zest, lime, white grapefruit, green apple and underripe peach, backed by hints of white flowers, crushed herbs and a subtle saline edge. On the palate, this is razor‑focused yet remarkably silky. A fine, crystalline texture carries pure citrus and stone‑fruit flavors, wrapped around a core of pronounced slate‑driven minerality. The wine is dry, with a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that gives great tension and length. Flint, salt and a gentle, spicy nuance linger in the long, structured, mineral finish. Still quite reserved and tightly wound in its youth, this 2021 has significant aging potential; it should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining more complexity, creaminess and tertiary notes of honey, smoke and dried citrus while maintaining its striking backbone.

Production
Sourced from the steep, south to southwest‑facing slopes of the Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, this wine is rooted in classic blue‑slate soils that are famed for producing some of Germany’s most precise and mineral Rieslings. The site’s sheer inclines demand painstaking hand harvesting, allowing only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes to be selected during multiple passes through the vineyard in mid‑October. In the cellar, Schloss Lieser follows a minimalist, terroir‑driven approach: gentle pressing, slow, cool fermentation (often with natural yeasts) in stainless steel and/or traditional large old oak casks (Fuder), followed by extended maturation on fine lees. This careful vinification preserves purity, tension and aromatic detail, while allowing the vineyard’s slatey minerality to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This Juffer Sonnenuhr GG shines with refined, nuanced cuisine that can match its intensity and precision. Pair it with oysters, scallops, sashimi and other delicate seafood, or with grilled fish, ceviche and citrus‑accented dishes that echo its bright acidity. It also works beautifully with fine poultry, veal, pork schnitzel, mild Asian dishes (especially those with ginger, lemongrass or light soy), and fresh goat’s or soft bloomy‑rind cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. In its first years, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open and reveal its full complexity; as it ages and gains more tertiary character, a shorter aeration or even serving straight from the bottle may suffice.

Producer
Schloss Lieser, led by Thomas Haag since 1992, has risen to the very top echelon of German wine estates and is now widely recognized as one of the Mosel’s elite producers. Coming from the renowned Haag family of Brauneberg, Thomas transformed Schloss Lieser through meticulous vineyard work and an uncompromising focus on quality, turning it into what many critics describe as a true “Champions League” estate. Today, the winery is celebrated for its exquisitely precise, slate‑driven Rieslings that marry intensity with remarkable drinkability and finesse. Consistently top‑rated in leading German wine guides, Schloss Lieser has received the highest accolades across multiple publications, with its Grosses Gewächs bottlings, including those from Juffer Sonnenuhr and Niederberg Helden, frequently cited as some of the very best dry Mosel Rieslings of their respective vintages.
