Description

The 2021 Weingut Prinz Hallgartener Jungfer Riesling VDP.Großes Gewächs is a distinctive dry Riesling from one of Rheingau’s most prized sites. Classified as a Großes Gewächs, it represents the top tier of dry Riesling from this estate, combining precision, depth and impressive age‑worthiness. The steep, southeast–to–southwest-facing slopes of the Hallgartener Jungfer vineyard and its quartzite-rich soils give this wine its striking mineral character and structure, a profile that has already earned it 96 points from James Suckling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2021 Jungfer Großes Gewächs shows a bright, pale lemon hue with green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is finely etched and expressive, with notes of wild berries and mountain herbs layered over citrus, white peach and a distinct wet-stone minerality. Hints of crushed slate, floral tones and a cool, earthy backdrop add further complexity. On the palate, the wine is taut, compact and structured, yet remarkably elegant. The wild berry and herbal notes carry through, joined by lemon zest, green apple and a saline, wet-earth minerality that lingers on the long, vibrant finish. Fine, almost tactile tannins give the Riesling an extra dimension and grip, while the acidity is racy but perfectly integrated. Thanks to its concentration and mineral backbone, this wine is highly enjoyable now with some aeration, but it also offers excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 8–15 years, developing more complexity, smokiness and honeyed nuances over time.

Production
The Hallgartener Jungfer vineyard sits high above the Rhine in the Rheingau, oriented from southeast to southwest, ensuring optimal exposure to the midday and afternoon sun. The soils here are rich in quartzite, which absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, supporting even ripening while preserving acidity and adding a pronounced mineral edge to the wine. Grapes for this VDP.Großes Gewächs are carefully selected and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure only the healthiest berries are used. In the cellar, vinification is focused on clarity and precision: gentle pressing, cool, controlled fermentation (often in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak) and extended time on the fine lees help build structure, texture and complexity without masking the vineyard’s character. The result is a powerful yet finely detailed dry Riesling that faithfully reflects its terroir.

Food & Serving
This Jungfer Großes Gewächs is a versatile partner at the table and shines with refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. Try it with grilled or roasted fish such as sea bass, turbot or trout, as well as shellfish, scallops or sushi. It pairs beautifully with white meats like veal, free-range chicken or pork tenderloin, especially when served with creamy sauces, light herb butter, or mushroom accents. Rich vegetable dishes—like asparagus with hollandaise, risotto, or dishes featuring fennel and leeks—also work very well. Serve at 10–12°C to allow the full spectrum of aromas and texture to unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to open up the wine’s compact structure and highlight its wild berry, herbal and mineral nuances.
