In the glass, the 2021 Vieux Château Certan displays a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, with a luminous edge that hints at its freshness and finesse. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered: ripe black cherries, blackcurrants and wild plums are woven with violets, graphite, tobacco leaf and a whisper of cocoa and cedar from fine-grained oak. Subtle notes of crushed herbs and pencil shavings add a distinctly Bordeaux, almost Médoc-like, fragrance to the wine’s Pomerol core. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet poised, with a beautiful interplay of ripeness and tension. Silky, almost velvety tannins frame flavors of dark berries, black cherry, and damson, complemented by hints of licorice, truffle, cigar box, and a savory, mineral edge from its gravel and clay soils. Vieux Château Certan sits on the famed Pomerol plateau, a patchwork of deep clay and gravel soils that provide ideal conditions for Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2021 blend typically leans heavily on Merlot, supported by a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, all hand-harvested plot by plot at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, each parcel is vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats, often using gravity-fed methods to preserve fruit integrity. Fermentations are carefully managed to extract fine tannins and aromatic purity rather than sheer power, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a high proportion of which are new) for around 18–22 months. The result is a wine that articulates both the nuances of the vintage and the timeless elegance of this exceptional terroir.

This 2021 Pomerol pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, duck breast, veal tenderloin, and classic beef preparations like entrecôte or tournedos with a red wine reduction. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and structure; in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatic profile. As the wine gains bottle age, a shorter decant—or simply allowing it to breathe in the glass—will be sufficient to unveil its full complexity.
