Description

The 2021 Vérité Assortment Case brings together three of Sonoma County’s most coveted Bordeaux-inspired reds in one collector-ready selection: La Joie, La Muse and Le Désir. Offered in extremely limited quantities and with no 2020 vintage produced, this mixed case is aimed squarely at serious enthusiasts and long-term investors. Crafted by legendary winemaker Pierre Seillan and the late Jess Jackson’s visionary project, these wines have repeatedly earned perfect and near-perfect scores from the world’s top critics, firmly placing Vérité among the elite of American fine wine.

Tasting Notes
Presented in an elegant assortment case, the three wines share a deep, saturated ruby-purple hue that hints at their concentration and age-worthiness. In the glass, Le Désir (Cabernet Franc–dominant) typically delivers soaring aromatics of dark cherries, crushed violets, graphite, cocoa and dried herbs, evolving with air into notes of warm spices and subtle floral lift. La Muse (Merlot–dominant) tends toward plush aromas of black plum, mulberry and blueberry compote, layered with licorice, mocha, anise and a touch of tobacco leaf. La Joie (Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant) leans more toward cassis, blackcurrant and blue fruits, wrapped in cedar, pencil shavings, espresso and hints of dried roses. On the palate, all three wines are full-bodied, richly textured and meticulously structured, but each has a distinct personality. Le Désir is the most vertical and aromatic, with vivid acidity, fine-grained yet assertive tannins and a detailed, mineral-inflected finish that unfolds in layers. La Muse offers the most opulence, with velvety tannins, deep, enveloping fruit and a luxurious, almost silky mouthfeel, balanced by focused freshness that keeps the wine precise rather than heavy. La Joie is powerful and architectural, with firm, ripe tannins, great drive and length, and a core of dark, pure fruit supported by savory, graphite and iron-like tones. The 2021 vintage, from a highly regarded Sonoma growing season, is built for the long haul; these wines will reward at least 10–15 years of cellaring and are capable of evolving gracefully for two decades or more under proper conditions.

Production
Vérité sources its fruit from meticulously selected vineyard sites across Sonoma County, choosing parcels for their specific soils, microclimates and exposures to echo the complexity and structure of great Bordeaux while expressing California’s sun-drenched intensity. Many of these vineyards sit on well-drained hillside and mountain slopes with a mix of volcanic, clay and gravelly soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Harvest is carried out by hand, block by block and often by individual micro-parcel, allowing Pierre Seillan and his team to pick at optimal ripeness and preserve pristine fruit quality. In the cellar, each tiny lot is vinified separately, giving the winemaker a broad palette of components from which to build the final blends. Fermentations are closely monitored for precision and balance, followed by élevage in carefully selected French oak barrels, a significant portion of which is new, to add structure, polish the tannins and introduce subtle notes of spice without overwhelming the wines’ innate character. The 2021 blends—Cabernet Franc–led Le Désir, Merlot–led La Muse, and Cabernet Sauvignon–led La Joie—are assembled only after extensive tasting and barrel selection, with quality taking precedence over volume every year.

Food & Serving
This trio is best enjoyed at the table with refined, savory dishes that can stand up to their depth and structure. Le Désir’s Cabernet Franc backbone makes it a superb match for herb-crusted lamb, dishes with rosemary and thyme, mushroom-based preparations, roasted game birds, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. La Muse, with its plush Merlot core, pairs beautifully with slow-braised beef short ribs, veal shank, truffle risotto, duck breast or rich, earthy vegetarian dishes featuring lentils and root vegetables. La Joie’s Cabernet Sauvignon dominance shines alongside classic ribeye or côte de boeuf, grilled venison, wagyu, or dishes with a charcoal or wood-fired element. Serve all three around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decant young bottles generously—at least 1–2 hours for aeration—especially for La Joie and Le Désir, which benefit from more time in a wide-based decanter. Older bottles, once matured, should be decanted more gently and briefly to preserve their delicate tertiary aromas.

Producer
Vérité was born from the meeting of California wine pioneer Jess Jackson (Kendall-Jackson) and Bordeaux vigneron Pierre Seillan in the 1990s, a partnership that set out to create world-class, Bordeaux-inspired blends from Sonoma County terroir. Seillan, with deep experience across multiple Bordeaux châteaux including Château Lassègue, found in Sonoma the freedom and diversity of soils and exposures he felt constrained from fully exploring under Bordeaux’s strict regulations. Vérité’s philosophy of micro-cru winemaking—treating each small plot as a distinct component—has resulted in three flagship wines: La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir, each reflecting a different Bordeaux varietal at its core. Over the years, these wines have earned multiple 100-point scores from leading critics such as The Wine Advocate and James Suckling, cementing Vérité’s status as one of the New World’s most acclaimed producers. Today, Pierre Seillan is in the process of passing the reins to his daughter Hélène, ensuring continuity of vision and craftsmanship and further solidifying Vérité’s significance as a benchmark for age-worthy, collectible Sonoma reds.
