Description
The 2021 Valdesil Valteiro María Ardoña is one of the rare jewels of Valdeorras, crafted from a tiny, single parcel planted exclusively to the almost-forgotten Galician red variety María Ardoña. This is a delicately structured yet characterful red that combines Atlantic freshness with the depth and tension of slate-based soils. Produced in minuscule quantities, it offers collectors and adventurous wine lovers an original expression of Galicia that you simply won’t find elsewhere.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a vibrant, medium ruby hue with a luminous, almost crystalline edge that hints at its finesse. On the nose, it is fragrant and lifted, with pure notes of wild red and black berries, fresh violets, and hints of mountain herbs, underpinned by a fine, stony minerality that clearly reflects its slate terroir.
The palate is elegant and precise rather than heavy, with juicy wild berry fruit—think bramble, raspberry, and a touch of black cherry—wrapped in silky yet present tannins. Floral tones return on the mid-palate, joined by a subtle spice and a cool, graphite-like mineral streak that gives energy and length. The oak is very well integrated, contributing gentle structure and texture without dominating the fruit. The finish is long, fresh, and savory, making the wine both highly drinkable now and promising for future development. Thanks to its fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, the 2021 Valteiro María Ardoña has very good aging potential and should evolve gracefully in bottle for 8–10 years from vintage, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
The Valteiro parcel is a minuscule 0.3-hectare plot in the village of Portela, within the Valdeorras appellation in Galicia. Here, vines rooted in poor, slate-rich soils are naturally restricted in vigor, concentrating flavor, minerality, and character in every grape. The Atlantic-influenced climate, with its cooling breezes and marked diurnal shifts, preserves acidity and aromatic intensity in the indigenous María Ardoña variety. The vineyard was planted in 1985 by Francisco Prada Gayoso, who has long championed native Galician grapes. Grapes are carefully harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest, perfectly ripe bunches reach the winery. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 6 months in 500L French oak barrels—large enough to limit overt wood influence—followed by 18 months in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity of fruit. It then rests a further 6 months in bottle before release, allowing the elements to harmonize into a seamless whole.
Food & Serving
This refined yet characterful red is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted pork, herb-crusted lamb, duck breast, or game birds, and works just as well with earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto, lentil stews, and roasted root vegetables. It is also an excellent match for semi-cured cheeses and charcuterie with a Galician or Iberian twist. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its floral aromatics and mineral tension. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the aromatics and soften the tannins, while older bottles can simply be poured carefully to avoid disturbing any sediment.
Producer
Valdesil is a benchmark estate in Valdeorras and one of the key names driving the quality revolution in Galicia. Best known for its old-vine Godello and expressive reds based on native varieties like Mencía and María Ardoña, the winery has built its reputation on meticulous vineyard work and a deep respect for local terroirs. The estate’s holdings in the Sil Valley, particularly on slate-rich slopes, are among the most prized in the region and yield wines of striking minerality and finesse. Since the 1980s, under the vision of Francisco Prada Gayoso, Valdesil has been instrumental in rescuing and elevating indigenous grapes, turning them into world-class wines that consistently earn critical recognition and help define the modern identity of Valdeorras.
