Description
The 2021 Teso la Monja Victorino Magnum is a powerful, age-worthy red from the high-altitude vineyards of Toro, crafted entirely from old-vine Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). Presented in a 1.5L magnum, it’s built for both special occasions and long-term cellaring, offering extra finesse and slow evolution in bottle. This is a benchmark Toro: intense, concentrated and deeply expressive, from one of Spain’s most respected wine families.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Victorino shows an opaque, inky purple core with a narrow ruby rim, signaling both youth and density. The nose is immediately seductive and layered: ripe blackberries, black cherries and plum compote interweave with cocoa, dark chocolate, wild herbs, graphite-like minerality and subtle toasted notes from French oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and richly textured, yet remarkably poised. Concentrated black fruit is framed by mineral undertones, savory herbs and a complex mix of spice—clove, licorice, a touch of black pepper—alongside finely integrated roasted coffee and cocoa from barrel aging. The tannins are ripe, broad and velvety, giving a powerful but polished structure, while the acidity keeps everything lifted and fresh. The finish is impressively long, echoing with dark fruit, minerals and spice long after the last sip. In magnum format, this vintage has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining additional complexity, tertiary notes and silkier texture.
Production
The grapes for Victorino come from selected parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena, at 650–800 meters above sea level in the DO Toro. The predominant sandy soils here are crucial: they helped protect many vines from phylloxera, allowing original, ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines to survive—an extreme rarity in the wine world. The fruit is sourced exclusively from vines 45 years and older, with very low yields around 15 hl/ha to ensure maximum concentration and character. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with grapes picked into small boxes to avoid damage and preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, careful, quality-focused vinification highlights the natural power of Tinta de Toro while preserving freshness and finesse, followed by 15 months of aging in French oak barrels to build complexity, structure and aromatic depth.
Food & Serving
This is an outstanding partner for rich, robust dishes: grilled or roasted lamb, slow-cooked beef cheeks, ribeye steaks, game (venison, wild boar), or Iberian pork will all match its intensity. It also shines alongside hearty stews, dishes with black truffle or wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Manchego, Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both fruit and spice without emphasizing alcohol. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended—60–90 minutes will help the wine open up aromatically and soften the tannins, especially in this magnum format.
Producer
Teso La Monja is the flagship Toro project of the renowned Eguren family, one of Spain’s most respected wine dynasties, long celebrated for their work in Rioja and for creating the iconic Toro wines Numanthia and Termanthia. After selling that original estate to Moët & Chandon, the family returned to Toro with renewed ambition, founding Teso La Monja to craft wines that express the region’s unique old vines and high-altitude sandy soils with even greater precision and elegance. Their vineyards in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena are planted exclusively to Tinta de Toro, with many parcels boasting very old, sometimes ungrafted vines. Since its inception, Teso La Monja has quickly established itself as one of the reference producers of the appellation, earning critical acclaim for powerful yet refined wines like Victorino that capture the authentic soul of Toro.
